While styling likely played a part, the biggest reason why the F10 is selling much better than the E60 is because it reaches a broader consumer base. It's not like the the E60 sold poorly. We've all seen the complaints, "BMW sold out to appeal to the Lexus crowd". And I think if you ask people now what they think about the E60 design, there's going to be a good amount who appreciate the Bangle design now because it represented what the E60 was (a sport saloon) vs. the F10 where the design tells you exactly what it's focus is on.
