Is it silly to spend a lot on a display case for my watches?

So I just discovered this sub forum, and am frankly wowed by the collections of watches many of you have. I just started collecting. I have two so far. My Guess waterpro watch that my recently departed father gave me when I was a child. And my brand new Navitimer, my first big boy watch. I already have a list of at least 3-4 more watches I want so I’m looking for a case to hold 6-8 watches. I saw a nice one on Nordstrom for ~$100:

The one from Nordstrom looks really nice, you should get that one.

You should look at Mozsly watch boxes also. https://www.mozsly.com/collections/watch-box

And $100-$200 on a watch box is not a lot.

I have this one and really like it. All depends on how large you expect your collection to get. They make smaller sized boxes too

I think probably like 6-8 watches max. So not the biggest of collections. Thanks for the recommendations, I’ll look to see which of these if any will fit in my bedside drawer

If it is within your budget you may wish to consider investing in a Wolf watch winder that also has a storage compartment. I have a double winder from them that is about 15 years old and still works without any issues. They make many different models and are currently are advertising a once a year sale on their website.

I use a couple humidors to store the watches and straps, tools and miscellaneous items.

Not silly. Esp if you have a collection and you want to protect them.

I think it’s a good idea. It’s nice to be able to see them, they are practically works of art and craftsmanship.

I have apple watches and I love them. I feel like they are one of the smart watches that have great technology and syncs with the apple ecosystem.

I never thought about getting any other kind of watch because the apple watch seems to have and do it all.

You mentioned a big boy watch. What kind of watch is this? is it the price?
or the materials its made from or is it the brand?

I totally agree, my Wolf winder sits on top of my dresser in the bedroom and looking at it puts a huge smile on my face every time I walk past it.

Nothing wrong with loving the Apple Watch — it’s great tech. When people here talk about a “big boy watch,” they usually mean a traditional mechanical or luxury timepiece that’s built with craftsmanship rather than software.

Think of it the same way BMW owners appreciate the feel of a finely engineered engine and precise handling — there’s a certain joy in the mechanics themselves.

Smartwatches are fantastic tools, but mechanical watches are about the experience and the artistry behind them. If you ever want to explore beyond smartwatches, there’s a whole world of automatic and mechanical pieces worth discovering — but enjoy what you have and take your time. Everyone starts somewhere.

Honestly, the watch is an accessory that makes me feel special whenever I wear it. Kinda like how women view jewelry. My breitling, if I forget to wind it, you have to set the time again. you gotta keep it away from strong magnetic fields. its a bit of work. My apple watch is just set it and forget it. It has so many functions and keeps accurate time.... but its not special. Everyone has one. Its just another utilitarian thing we all have.

There's no justifiable reason to spend a lot on an analog watch. The apple watch outperforms it in every way, any digital watch will. But back when I was a kid and we used to fly, there werent TVs mounted to the backs of the cheap seats. So I had to patiently wait for a 2 hour movie to play in the aisle TV and then stare at the navigation map the rest of the flight. So I'd always pull out the duty free catalog and look at the stuff they had in there. And the Brietling Navitimer was one of the watches I thought was really cool, especially since it was one of the most storied chronographs. so yes you can say part of it is craftsmanship, wearing something that has some history behind it. But mostly honestly, its shiny, it has heft on my wrist, its more about how you feel when you wear it than what it does.

I dont equate it really any differently than having a BMW. There isnt anything special that a BMW does today that a Hyundai doesnt do, especially when it comes to interior comfort. On the track sure it'll out perform all mass market cars, but honestly who's tracking most of any cars BMW sells? But having that BMW roundel staring at you makes you feel special even when you're stopped in traffic.

FYI, Breitling is currently offering a free 3 year extended warranty if you purchased your Navitimer directly from them or an official Breitling boutique, authorized wholesale partner, or a Breitling outlet store.

There is a "Catch 22" as you have to have them perform a water resistance test every two years from the date of purchase. This test must be carried out at an authorized Breitling Service Centre. However the good news is that the test is offered free of charge.

Therefore, you should definitely check out the once a year Wolf sale that ends on Nov. 28th as they have a solid reputation for making an excellent winder.

The majority of Breitling watches require either 650 or 800 TPD (turns per day) and need to be wound bi-directionally. If you do decide to purchase a winder, I recommend that you should only look at a programable model where you can set the TPD. 😉

Also my winder can be powered by D cell batteries when I unplug it from an outlet. For peace of mind, when I go away on a long vacation, I disconnect it from the AC outlet and store it safely hidden in the back of one of my closets and it keeps on winding.

I would get a Mozsly watch winder. Does everything a Wolf winder does at a much cheaper price. Even runs on either ac or battery power.

I agree with you that the Mozly winder is a good choice and costs considerably less money than the Wolf winders. However they have some limitations as they only make winders that can store one or two watches. Also if you want to add more winders you have to stack them and connect each one with a cable on the back. I personally don't like that stacked look.

In my opinion, if you can afford it and are building a really nice watch collection you may wish to invest in a Wolf. Their winders are far more attractive and come in all different sizes that allows you to store more than 2 watches.

I like the price point for mozsly, but the wolf sale cant be beat lol. not sure why i picked this as a new hobby, I'm already spending way more than I ever thought I would. Thank you for the recommendations!

Their customer service is great to deal with. My winder is about 15 years old and one of my older style cuffs that holds the watches inside the winder needed to be replaced. I searched everywhere including eBay and they are no longer available anywhere online. I emailed their customer service dept. and they managed to find one of these older style cuffs and shipped it to me free of charge.

As you are planning for the future I recommend that depending on your budget and tolerance for pain that you choose either a 3 or 4 watch winder with a storage compartment on top where you can keep any watches and extra straps you aren't currently using.

Also pay attention to their features as not everyone of their winders offers you their more advanced TPD programming which might be overkill and you may not need. If you have any questions on this point and your Breitling I suggest that you contact their customer service dept.
