Both - they’re very different from each other. More so than the internet would lead you to believe.
Z K wroteOh I agree, the E60 is the M5 to get, esp when they get DCT swap working. But the E39 is so damn pretty. The problem with the E39 M5 is that the steering rack is completely disconnected from the car. The steering rack gear has an automatic pressure-point adjustment and recirculating ball steering. They should have stuck to a rack and pinion steering. This causes all sorts of steering issues such as a dead zone in the center, zero feeling and a delayed steering response when cornering. It is by far one of the worst steering systems BMW has done.
Sure, the engine is good but it makes for a terrible driving car if you're interested in more than going in a straight line. This makes the e39 M5 a big fail and makes it a terrible driver's car.

He then purchased a M6 6MT with the same engine and had the same thing happen.Oh I agree, the E60 is the M5 to get, esp when they get DCT swap working. But the E39 is so damn pretty.
Both were replaced under BMW new car warranty but he swore off the V10 after that. I would never want one of those cars either. It's one thing to enjoy looking at or driving someone else's car but it's a different thing to own.
For the M5, I enjoyed driving the F90. Very refined and tons of power. But I have no idea what that would be like to own.
I’d go with the E92 all day long
