Friends M3 - FAIL

Wish I knew more, but it appears my friend's BMW M3 (2011/ 2012 - probably not even 15k km) has failed him the last time:

His text:
"Rolling in the Bimmer in regular drive mode and it starts jerkin like the trannys about to pack and then it lights up like an Xmas tree..."

See attached picture for errors on the iDrive.

His previous troubles were something to do with the ECU needing replacement within first month of ownership. Had to be replaced and took over 2 months of troubleshooting and repeated failures to get properly fixed.

Feel bad for him and us, the community, since we just lost a member

Anyone else have similar failures?

Sounds bad, but I suspect all those failures are triggered by one common fault. I would not give up on it yet, especially if he can make a case for a warranty claim!

Mine went to the dealer 3 times and threw a total of 3 pages of fault codes. Got a pair of new brake sensors and a new ECD module. Went back with more issues and they were about to replace the JBE when it lit up in their shop.

ALL of the issues from the first event 6 mo prior were due to a faulty KL30 relay. Little part behind the glove box. Replaced that and car has been flawless since.

mine had power loss issues the day after i bought it! spent a month at BMW while they tried to figure it out...turned out to be a DME failure. I felt outraged that this "ultimate driving machine" couldn't even start the day after i bought it. A year later and its still driving like a dream.

BMW should acknowledge the car has an issue (especially if you just bought it) and will do everything they can to fix it. On the bright side, your car will get thorough inspection and should be problem free for a good while.

Deadly, I just saw your location.

Would you mind driving down to Calgary and letting my borrow the 335 for a few days? We're visiting my wife's family and I've been condemned to drive their 18 year old Toyota Camry. They're a little older so when we all go out I am the driver. I've never heard old people say "slow down" so many times in my life.

So I'm going to need your car for a couple days. This Toyota sucks.

On a serious note, we went out to Drumheller on Saturday. Well less than half way back the Camry blew a front tire. My FIL let it wear down through ALL the belts along the inside. Terrible maintenance. Last documented oil change was 2009. lol.

But, despite being an 18 year old car, it doesn't do any of the bs our BMW's do.

I'll be there Saturday morning with the AW E70 35d tho - will that suffice?

Was it involved in hurricane Sandy? :-) Seriously, I've not seen or heard of this type of multi codes/lights myself but I do know that even a weak battery can play havoc on the electronics of these cars.

Lately, that's the first thing I suggest to people with electrical issues in BMW's, lol.

Well, flying out in 3 hours so probably not. Wife will still be here for a week but she cares far less than I do.

I have gotten to the point that I can get the FIL's Camry around turns pretty quick. I will say though that it's the only car I've ever driven, in 25 years, that will think for more than than 5 seconds with the pedal fully down before initiating a downshift. VERY frustrating when merging with a truck coming up at 110.

Regarding the BMW, while it seems moot at this point, it is likely a relay. According to my SA at the dealership, if the issue hadn't happened to them at the shop they never would have found it.

I'm looking for a new digital camera. I've been reading reviews online, but can't seem to decide on one.

Can you please send me the model of the one you used to take that photograph?
