Cool chart.

With the popularity of the 3 series sedan, kind of interesting that it didn't translate into e9x M3 sedan sales/numbers.

The exact reason the Camry sells so well. Kind of sad for the BMW brand.

I don't agree with that. If you say 'The exact reason why Mercedes S class sells well' I would agree with you. Camry is not an example of quality, luxury, refinement, comfort. It's quiet comical to compare a 3 series or a 5 series to Camry.

Except the S class does not sell well. Bland driving machines like the Camry do.

Ultimately, BMW wants to be more Toyota/Lexus like because as you pointed out, that sells (guess who was the sales leader in the luxury segment until a tsunami took out their production?).

My point here is that just because more customers buy something doesn't mean it is "better" and in BMW's case, it is sad.

For interest.

The peak sales of the E60 occured in the first full year of it's production at 191,361 units.

But in fairness, the economic crisis didn't help the E60, and China sales have been booming in the F10 era, which has no doubt given the numbers a boost.

The X6 is a huge deal for BMW. Initial projection for the first two years was double the expectation at BMW. And the car dominates in key strategic growth markets. It no wonder competitors are moving forward on their own initial concepts.
It will for sure be interesting to see what the other two bring to the table. But these vehicles have been rumoured for a long time, are they actually coming? As with the X6, development would have started with an existing model, so it seems to be taking them a long time to finish them off and get them to market.

I like the E71 a lot. The F16, from what we've seen so far.. not so sure.

All the more proof that they should have brought the f20 stateside, it's sales numbers equalling the x1 and x3 globally. They underestimate the take rate here in the us.

One thing we can't do is compare incentives across generations - incentives which may be skewing data...

Looks like the E60 tailed off a couple of years before the F10 arrived, and the F10 has taken a little while to pick up - makes sense I guess.

Interestingly though even though 5 series sales are about where you'd expect in the US, they have steadily become a smaller portion of global 5er sales - which again is pretty much what we'd expect since I'm sure they'll be shifting more in China.

edit: USA figures aren't given by bodystyle, so these numbers are all based on total 5er range sales.

WOW - thank you Matski!

As I sort of suspected, apparently US drivers are not as enamored with "comfort and refinement" changes as China and other countries might be.

yah but their numbers are going down every year. no wonder bmw try to change it to 4 series coupe. they're nice but forthe price range comparing with many other models, it doesn't make sense to buy them.

i see a lot of coupe but most are 2010 and earlier on the street in northern CA here.

China numbers are really hard to find.. (and read!) but for example 5er in
2011:

China: 70,850
USA: 45,915

I sure hope the 3er and 5er touring continue to outsell the 3er and 5er GT's. Hope they get axed at the next major model change.

Lack of significant Touring sales in the US will mean they get the axe altogether from North America. 3er and 5er GT are models aiming at around 10% of overall 3er and 5er sales.

And to all intents and purposes. They have succeeded.

The 5er Li is a huge success in China so much so that the success continues with the BMW 530Le which is the eDrive version of the 5er.
Exclusive to China, this model is an important strategic development as it pioneers electric mobility in a very popular segment and one that will use and see the benefits of electric mobility. This launches in a few weeks time.

I'd be inclined to agree but the '07 and '08 totals combined are equal to total coupe sales (excluding the Z4MC). Wondering if BMW did some creative book keeping.
