Manual or DCT?

Ok guys, which do you want, which do you need, which do you think is best?

Old fashioned manual gearchanging, under your full control, or computer controlled precision shifts, with the override option?

And what are you going for on your own cars?

I'd love to have a 6 speed, but the allure of the lightning fast DCT is too much.

DCT for me.

I've always had manuals, except in my SUVs, but I may go for DCT this time. The advantages of the extra gear, auto option for my wife, etc. are attractive. The downside will be weight, cost and potential for more things to go wrong out of warranty. I definitely will get a warranty extension if I get it.

DCT is the way of the future. And I'm ready for a change after owning manual cars all my life.

+1 Greg, on the extended warranty though.

As a co-founder of the 6MT club my choice is obvious!

I have had the luxury of owning a M-DCT style gearbox so I know all abouts it's benefits but on the M3 I chose the manual purely on the ground of it's my first true driver's car and I feel I want to be in control of every element of it.

Well, DCT does seem to be the way of the future.

Then again, Michael Schumacher was once asked why he didn't have the F1 tranny in his personal Ferrari. His response was something about how the F1 was quicker, especially around a track, but the manual was simply more fun.

I think simple and fun will work for me.

I will get the M-DCT if it is out by March. If not I will go ahead and buy the manual because I am having a hard time waiting.... I love the SMG on the M5 though...

DCT!

I have ordered my M3 with M-DCT for April 08.

DCT:

+ 7 gears
+ instant shifts
+ paddles

6MT:

As much as I like manuals, this one simply sucks. Has anyone of you 6MT-club-guys done a test drive?

Yes. It's quite smooth and quick (second gear not always), in short a transmission MT club members can enjoy.
What exactly didn't you like about it?

Best regards, south

Same here too. But if I do get official word that the M-DCT will only be a slightly late introduction (1-3 months after launch of the 6mt) before my order actually comes in, I may give up my first-in-line spot and wait the extra couple of months for it. If it's longer than 3 months, I'll take the 6mt because I lack patience.

south,
During your test drive, did you notice if the presence of a CDV was an issue that made smooth driving tricky under normal conditions?

Well, seen as I have one of the few V6 TTs with a 6MT and not DSG and it took me ages to perfect Heel Toe downshifting I think Ill stick with Manual again.

I'd vastly prefer DCT, but each month's delay will hurt me...

A couple of observations:

1. If DCT is indeed in more demand by a huge margin, why did people insist on BMW giving them 6MT in the US for the M5? Does the SMG in the M5 not perform or what? (Clearly, one possibility is the 25 votes on this forum are not necessarily representative of the US M5 consumer base.)

2. Why haven't we seen some kind of a spy pic of a DCT M3 by now? Isn't that odd?

Although DCT may be faster, I enjoy making love to a clutch pedal. I'll sacrifice shift speed for added physical enjoyment.

I will cast my vote. For some reason there is that 1% of doubt. The throttle blipping would be nice too.

Poll needs an "Undecided" choice. I want a test drive first.
