Just got an e92 M3. Tire rubbing question!

Hi guys, I've tried to search and read through most of the stickied threads above.. especially the one that says rub / no rub index and I can't seem to find an answer to my question.

I'm getting rubbing when I turn the wheel about 70% or so. I can tell that it's rubbing on the wheel well because I can see a patch where the tire is rubbing along it and making it blacker.

So here are the specs:

The car came with what I'm told are 19x9.5 fronts, the offsets are unknown to the original owner so I don't know. The car is also lowered by about an inch with Eibach springs just on the front. The car ALSO has 5 mm spacers installed on the front wheels.

So with all these above specs, I'm getting rubbing during turns. From my research I'm thinking that 255/35/19 would solve my problem? Can anyone please confirm this?

If its not rubbing too bad I would just leave it.

I think removing the 5mm spacers would be the first course of action to solve the problem.

If you want to keep the spacers I doubt running a 255/35/19 will solve your problem but it depends on what size tires you have on now. 265/30/19 is your best bet to cure this sort of rubbing compared to 255/35/19. The slightly smaller diameter outweighs the increase in width.

You didn't state your current front tire size.... Hard to help without that info. You should also tell us the make and model of wheel you have. We may be able to determine the offset with that info.

I'm running 235/40/19's in the front and good point on the wheels. The wheels are alufgelen sf-71's, 19x9.5 i believe.

I just googled alufgelen sf-71 and it appears to be available in 19x9.5 et20 and et35. I'm not sure why you didn't start there...? Is the wheel sitting at the edge of the fender? Even without the 5mm spacers, et20 is an agressive offset and will sit at the fender edge. Are the wheels sunk inside of the fenders? If so then you probably have the et35 version. Your tire size doesn't make much sense. 235 is narrower than stock (245). Does the tire look stretched? If so you probably have 9.5" wheels but you could have 8.5" or 9", or even 8" fronts. The wheel sizing and offset should be stamped on the back. I'm not sure why anyone would downgrade their tire size. In addition the overall diameter of a 235/40/19 is 26.4". The max diameter in the front is 26", which is the overall diameter of a 255/35/19. I would either switch to 255/35/19 or 275/30/19 in the front but that depends on the rear tire/wheel size and front offset. I would absolutely ditch the 235/40/19's because they make absolutely no sense on an M3. Lastly, I would ditch the cheap replica wheels, but that is up to you. I would rather have OEM wheels or something higher quality. I hope this helps.

Thanks man. I didn't know the offsets could be had from the wheel itself. So right now the wheel is sitting a tiny bit off the edge of the fender with 5 mm spacers. That's probably the ET20's then?

I guess my easiest choice at this point would be to get some new proper size rubber on the fronts if the spacer removal doesn't fix it. I'll check it this weekend.

I did find a tire size calculator online so I'll see if I can use that to gauge how much clearance I can get too.

I would get rid of the front tires no matter what. They are simply a downgrade from stock and aren't the right size for an M3.

Yeah I will do that eventually and move to proper sizing. Since the tires are in pretty decent shape I wanted to see if I can just ride them out though. Will see when I jack up the car and remove spacers.

I removed the spacers this weekend. No luck still hearing rubbing when I turn. Guess I am going to have to buy some front tires. It's not bad at all as far as the extent of the rubbing but it's still bugging me.

I have 265 fronts right now and I have run 275 with very little rubbing. Do you rub turning right and left? With 235 fronts you should not be rubbing at all. My guess is your alignment is off. Are you lowered? If your at stock ride height with 235s up front and rubbing, even with an essentially ET15 front wheel, you should not be rubbing.

Yes it's lowered by an inch actually. It doesn't rub in the straights thank god.. but it does rub when I turn the wheel far. For now I am just going really slow in those kinds of turns and it seems to be fine. It's only barely rubbing so I think these new 245/35/19 OEM size tires should do the trick.

I would make sure you rub in the same spot when turning left and when turning right. If your not, you have an alignment issue.

I am lowered on 18x9.5 ET15 wheels with 265 series tires in the front. Your on 19s so your wheel is already closer to the wheel arch but I am still leaning towards your alignment being off.

If you bought this car used, I would seriously get the alignment checked out.

The key is that he has 235/40/19's which are too large of an overall diameter. The tire width is not the issue, it's the diameter... His tire diameter is almost one inch larger than your 265/35/18 and 275/35/18 tires.

Just for reference it is for sure the fact that the tire profile overall is too tall, not the width. When I ran 234/36/19 on a stretched setup on volks that were only et7 offset it barely rubbed
