Many engine failures go unreported

I believe the majority of engine failures go unreported due to concerns of making this info public knowledge. I'm aware of three M3 owners with blown engines (two with bearing failures) that are reticent to come forward with this info.

What is there to be concerned about in terms of making it public

ROFL. Haha thanks Dave. , You got me guys. I know it's a I6, but for some reason I always call 6 cylinders V6's.

And that's not counting the eight that I posted photos! But some people took back their votes. So it's unclear to me how many there are in this list right now.

I wouldn't pay too much attention to the numbers...loads have voted by mistake. In addition to those who have noted their mistake there are quite a few others that look plain wrong...have just bought a car, haven't bought one yet, wrong year etc. Plus those who vote on behalf of someone else - its all a bit of a shambles.

Let's see if it's possible to make sense of the mess. First of all, I don't see anything wrong with people voting on behalf of another person if they have come here and stated the car owner is not a forum member. There's no reason to distrust the people who were honest enough to say they were voting for somebody else who wasn't a forum member. It doesn't mean the car doesn't exist nor that the engine didn't blow. Therefore, their votes should count. But I will try to make sense of all of the mistaken votes, and the votes that we know aren't in the totals.

2008: (-3) -System of A..., -jawwadh, -tokic_o
2009:
2010:
2011: (-1) -Cas75
2012:
2013:

Then add in the ones mentioned here but not voted:
2008: (+1) +regular guy
2009:
2010:
2011: (+4) +regular guy, +regular guy, +regular guy, +1fastdoc
2012: (+1) +regular guy
2013: (+2) +Mike Benvo, +regular guy
Unkn: (+2) +regular guy, +regular guy

Adjusted totals:
2008: 9
2009: 5
2010: 2
2011: 13
2012: 2
2013: 5
Unkn: 2
=======
Total: 39

I know of 19 cars so add those in too!
So that makes 58.

Right, but you haven't posted photos of them.

I think the best thing to do is to trust people if they say they are posting for another who isn't on the forums. Two of the photos I posted are people on the forums. But I can see from the votes that neither has added their names to the list. If they do come forward, then I will be sure to point it out so there's no confusion about voting. But that brings up another thing to think about. You can see that even people on the forums with blown motors are hesitant to tell others or "vote" unless they can remain anonymous.

39, only ??!

Only 39 directly and indirectly reported cases of broken engines in ~half a month of this poll being active on a forum dedicated to the E92 M3 with 181,000+ members ? that is 0.021 % or one in 4.5 thousands cars.

So I know it is not adequate to take the forum total population but It is not 1% !

The power of the internet and graphic pictures and some people already think it is nearly a coin toss on their cars failing or not. So funny.

Let's be very generous and say that 2000 of the total 57000 M3 population is:
1) are all still running and none been crashed and totaled
2) on this sub forum regularly
3) reading this thread
4) willing to respond without anonymity

Those are some pretty big and generous assumptions. That would put the failure rate at 1.95% of total population if everything scales equally. That's a very large failure rate to me because I expect there to be about < 0.1% failure rate for a well engineered and well manufactured product. But again, that's just me.
