Obviously not gospel. But we don't have that for either side yet.
But I am not debating the base level trim price with coaster. He did say "this car" and in this thread we surely ain't talking about the base GT-R. Are we coaster?...

Very impressive. Especially for a car at this price or expected price.

Although I have order of a new M. I have started testing the waters at Nissan.

All three trims are supposed to have the same engine. I "hear" the highest trim makes extensive use of CF. However, we cannot say which trim the 7:38 car falls into. If indeed there are differing trim levels.

Excellent pics. Are those all you could find? What site are these from?

Love the cutaway shot.

Wow, I am doing some more preliminary investigation as well. Amazing pics and technology. But the rumors and mag. quotes/estimates I have been reading on a GT-R forum suggests under $80k USD. Not sure what this means as far as trim levels and which price this is.

@coaster: Hear that? Still want to do some betting? I do.

Somebody asked me why the GTR was not branded Infinity.

Enlighten me.

I know the old one was Nissan.
I know its supposed to be performance, not luxury. but...

Neither seem like convincing reasons.

and $80k for a Nissan seems like bad marketing.

Supercar.net has the tires for this run listed as slicks. What gives?

Wow, my bad. I am truly shocked by how many of you guys are just finding out about the details released earlier this week in Tokyo. I even considered posting the links Wednesday morning, but I figured we had enough flaming without more GTR threads.

Is anyone considering this car? At low-$70k starting, I think its the bargain of the decade. I wonder if you can even get one? I think the production is much lower than the M3, and probably will have higher markups, and for a longer period than the M3. That said if this car comes in below $70k, it will definitely be added to the list.

The Autoweek I received yesterday has a review of the car at a press-drive at the N-Ring. The article includes a quote by the chief engineer (IIRC) who says depending on the driver and conditions, the cars runs anywhere from a 7:44 to 7:58 on the Nordschleife.

Thanks for the pics. Looks great from the rear. The back seat does not seem functional...

I agree with Swamp that it makes no sense from an engineering standpoint. Mostly likely a feeble justification for the reltively high weight considering the size of the car and the amount of plastic used in it.

If this car is indeed in the $70k range it should put pressure on BMW to keep the M3 at $60 or below; except for the name, the GT-r is more impressive than the M3 as a sports machine.

This is a perfect opportunity for the M division to build an M3 GTR or an M6 GTR to directly compete with this one. I certainly will not spend 70 - 80K on a nissan, but I think it looks good and from a performance stand point, this car is amazing.

If only I could find that GT-R forum where they flamed people for not believing 7:15, not to mention 7:35. Oh I'd die laughing just lurking. Or, just block quoting text and not adding any of my own.

http://www.motortrend.com/roadtests/...ogy_specs.html

It seems like there will be a different version of the base engine putting out 530hp, which might or might not be the one that did the 7:38.

The article has some interesting details about the manufacturing process (they are built on rigs), CF driveshaft, and AWD. I didn't realize the tranmission was mounted in the rear!

And I really like the instrument panel. They kept it to the point, and used a smart startegy to push the details to the medium size nav screen. Way to go Nissan! Much nicer than the M3 layout...

Fishy

Coaster and others with an interest in this achievement please have a look at the excellent work by lucid (and a couple minutes from me) to show that this GT-R time is what we call in science an "outlier". I'd be willing to place a bet with anyone that one or more of my 4 hypothesis in this link below are true.

Something is wrong with the GT-R time.

The 7:38 time was on "cut slicks", according to the Chief Engineer in this article:

http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/news/de...?storyId=17066

But the track had some "semi-wet" areas.

This seems to be the only source reporting "cut-slicks" so it could be a true cut racing slick, could be "DOT" race rubber, or it could be a language translation issue, as the Chief Engineer goes on to explain they weren't interested in race slick times.

Even among cut slicks and street-legal race rubber, you can buy everything form a qualifying tire good for 1 hard lap to an endurance type tire harder than some street legal tires. I don't think we'll ever know exactly which tire everyone uses unless it's an official Sport-auto time where they specify OEM rubber
