Dashboard Rattle (w/ video) E92 M3

Hi All:

I've had this one for some time and it only shows itself during the rough bumps on the road like these rumble strips in the video (around 21 sec and on). It can be fine for the majority of driving and it does pass initial set of rumble strips with no rattle but the last one cause this terrible rattle sound...

Seems to come from behind the speedometer over the top

Maybe it actually resonates from the hood area abut it sounds like a cabin noise... About 35k km on the car

Any ideas? I don't really want to go to the dealer and strip the dash and have another set of rattling issues for several hundred $$$ ....

Thanks!

Sounds like the top speaker cover, but could also be the fuse panel in the glove box, it's ridiculously under insulated fisher price plastic on fisher price plastic. The speaker cover in the center is actually two pieces, you can pry the upper piece out with a credit card, but the lower section is held with T-20 torx IIRC.

Thanks! Will check it out tomorrow and see if it rattles. I assume it's the bottom piece that might rattle since the top one is quite firm.

For me, it was the top piece, it contracts and expands in the heat/cold. I ended up replacing it, and using some super thin felt on the underneath of the top piece, invisible, and reassembled it. If it's the glovebox, felt on the rear panel solves that POS.

This thread has been invaluable. I've been getting an annoying rattle ever since it got cold.

Photo of the two pieces atop the dash.

#2 clips/snaps into #5, which is held by torx screws.

Is there a site that has all the schematics available? I need one of the rear hub/rotor assembly.

Thanks for the schematic Kurgan!

Potentially could be a contact between #6 and #2, but it definitely sounds like it's coming from the driver's side windshield vent area on top of the dash.

By the sound of it would you think it might be coming from the engine bay? (one of the rubber gaskets wearing out)

It's entirely possible that the strut braces are not torqued to spec, also, if you've ever removed the entire airbox, there are two silencer pieces that often fall out onto the ground and causes the entire airbox to rattle like a bitch. I had to order a replacement myself. The A pillar is also notorious for rattles. Behind it, is a clip that can click against the steel pillar. Behind the SRS cover, there is also a torx screw, that may be loose. Maybe try these out and see if you're close.

Try the screws that mount the tach . They came loose on mine and caused a lot of noise. Simple hex head Allen key...

Thanks. Are these the ones which are on the underside of the visor - just like the nav screen?

I have a crazy rattle that seems like it's coming from behind the climate control area. The fuse box is one place I haven't thought of. I hope that's it. !

Fixed the thing finally at the dealership. It was none of the things mentioned but the back of the instrument cluster making contact with the reinforcement bracket in the back. Bracket was adjusted and felt insulation added.

Dash didn't have to be removed with about an hour of labour.
