2009 Boxster S PDK vs 2009 BMW M3 DCT?

So I know that Porsches often pop up in comparisons to the M3 here, but the Boxster perhaps a little more so vs the Cayman and 911.

So here is my question and issue: I currently have a 12' GTI manual daily driver, which is staying. I want a 2nd, fun performance car. Space is not important, I am looking more for an exciting car to drive. For the M3 - convertible is not a necessity, If I find the right sedan or coupe I am just as happy.

I am in between an M3 with DCT, about 2009 - and at a similar price, a 2009 Boxster S with PDK.

I know the Boxster is the sports car here, but I have always been very excited by the M3 - great engine. I did drive a Boxster recently and was surprised at how fast it actually was, in fact seemed very close to the M3.

Any ideas here? Is the Boxster a no-brainer? I'm not myself yet, since the M3 is still very alluring with that engine.

Boxster no question. Straight line speed they are not far apart, actually the new Cayman S with 325 hp runs a 12.4@112.1 mph which the old Boxster isn't too much slower and that is about what the M3 traps with DCT.

But if you want a razor sharp car, the boxster makes the M3 feel like an SUV and the steering on the Boxster makes the m3s feel lazy and numb by comparison. As a second car the Boxster is the only choice here IMO.

If you could get yourself into a Boxster Spyder that would be even better. Nothing BMW can touch that car in terms of the driving experience.

I would get the Boxster S also if you dont mind a convertible. Light, handles great, fast.

If space is no issue, boxster! Or better yet boxster spyder

Whoops, just read the post above. Sound advice. Also the spyder will retain value for yrs to come. I had a hard time deciding between that and my gt3

The spyder is nice - but over my budget. I'm more in the 2009 Boxster S range.

Winter is coming up, too - which is good and bad. Good that prices are lower for these cars, but bad because you can't use them as much.

Both cars are great and you'll be happy with either one.

Go with your gut and don't over-analyze it.

EPS is not bad, once you drive for a little bit you totally forget about it.

boxter S and don't look back, but honestly, you should save up and pony up for the new one.... aesthetically beautiful and hard to beat, much better handling than previous model, and a joy to drive anywhere.

I'm leaning towards the boxster s too - but I am surprised at how much more you guys recommend it over the m3. I guess it's just a much more focused sports car.

I think if you needed a single car, the M3 would be better candidate cause it doesn't everything surprisingly well. However because you have a GTI, the boxster is a good choice.

Having said that, the M3 is pretty damn good. Test drive both

Yes, I've driven both. That makes it even harder! The M3 certainly has a very exciting engine and good DCT transmission.

But, getting in the Boxster S is a little bit more of a special experience. It's just lower, more sporty, more exotic. Feels a bit more raw when driving.

The e90/e92/e93 M3 is always one I wanted - but we have an X3 35i so at least my BMW urges get reduced if i get the Boxster, ha.

My wife drives an '09 Cayman with PDK and I have the M3. They are both great cars but I prefer the M3. I think DCT is a better transmission, I love the V8 engine both in performance and sound, and the M3 has more space and practicality. I enjoy driving my M3 more. That being said, I have my M3 modified to my liking which helps sway me in that direction. If I were to modify the Cayman, then I'm sure it would be a more difficult decision. As an only car the Boxster / Cayman would be tough simply because it doesn't have much room. I also think that the Boxster / Cayman are somewhat feminine looking; not Audi TT level but they are more feminine than an M3 or a 911.

As a driver's car, the Boxster S in on another level...drive them both and youll see why. The M3 will feel like an 18 wheeler in comparison to the go kart feel and precision of the Boxster S. Its really THAT much better. And then some.

I really enjoyed driving the Boxster I test drove. I couldn't see myself getting the older model to be honest. The newest one just looks amazing and the interior is a step above. I'd for sure have buyer's remorse. No such thing with my M3 (ever). But that's just my 2 cents of course.

The price difference between a 2013 981 Boxster S and a 2009 BOxster S is still pretty large at this point though, the 2009's are in the $30k's while the 981's are still nearly double the price for some models.

M3 all the way, there's no doubt. It's a man's car

Whereas the Boxster, kind of a girlie car I see only girls driving Boxters around here, yet I have to see a girl driving an M3.

Apart from this, the V8 engine is a piece of art, handling is on par with the Boxster, looks much better, much more high-end power and speed, and you can even get rid of the GTI if you go for the M3.

Definetely, get the M3 !

Cayman S is better than Boxster S, but both loose against E92 M3...

997.2 911S is more tempting, but 2009 Cayman or Boxster no...
