Lockton. BMWCCA discount. You can get a single weekend or a pack with either 3, 6, 9 or 12 per year. Maybe not 3. Price is pretty much a straight percentage of value you want covered.

I have Amica Mutual for my regular insurance. At least in Texas, their policy's only track-related exclusion is if you're practicing for or participating in any organized racing or speed contest, which wouldn't apply to an instructor- and class-based HPDE. It probably would apply to open track days, but HPDE insurance wouldn't cover you for that either. I've written extensively about Amica in other threads that should come up if you search for my nickname and Amica, but they are a truly great company from both a cost and customer service perspective. Every time I've talked with them on the phone they've been a pleasure to deal with -- how often do you think that about your insurance company?

^ I have Amica as well (for many years). I agree they are a fantastic Insurance Company.

However I inquired 4 years ago with them and was told they weren't sure they would cover HPDE's. My fault for not following up. I will do so Monday but (and you may have covered this in your Amica Thread) did you receive a specific HPDE Rider to your Policy? Please PM me if you would like since I may be OT.

For the benefit of this thread, for the past few years I have been using Lockton with no issues.

I've used Lockton regularly myself. Never had a payout, but word of mouth seems to be that they are decent.

I would be very reluctant to rely on any insurance company to payout for HPDEs. I agree that if the language is "racing or speed contest" that they should likely cover HPDEs, but the majority have changed the language to "any organized event held on a racetrack" or similar. The problem is that it can be difficult to know the exact policy language without first getting the insurance, unless you can find someone with that insurance in your state (since insurance language is state specific).

Good heads up about ontrackinsurance.com. I hadn't heard of them before, but it looks legit, and I might do a price compare at events next year. One thing I like with them vs Lockton as apparently you can cancel your policy up to the morning of the event and get a full refund no hassle. Lockton only lets you get a refund once purchased if you get a statement from the organizer that you didn't attend, so usually I sign up last minute and have come close to forgetting to sign up a few times.

Ontrack Insurance were excellent when I ran out of talent at NHMS earlier this year. I have Amica and they cover driver education events, but not racing or preparing to race events

I've used ontrackinsurance.com multiple times. They are very quick to respond and provide you the coverage binder. You can do it a day or two before the event. Pricing is very fair, and you can note down your coverage amount. One thing I like about them is events include 1-3 day events, all for the same price. So two day events make the most sense.

Note that the majority of these track day policies are for damage to your car and do not provide liability coverage, either for other's property or in the worse case other people. There must be some out there that will write liability coverage, but the ones I have looked at are all property damage to one's own car.

In NC just recently (heavily regulated insurance industry) they revised the policy language (that all companies have to abide by) to disallow comprehensive and collision coverage and to limit liability coverage to (I think) $32k for use of your car on a track/racing surface/in competition/etc.

Pay particular attention to your liability exposure. If you're ruled at fault in a worst case scenario, waiver or no waiver signed by all parties, the potential liability exposure will pale in comparison to any car's value. Generally these waiver-excepting situations are due to gross negligence on the liable parties' fault, so for a participant it would very rare one would think.

For those with umbrella liability policies, note that in NC anyway, since the policy language specifically limits the automobile insurance policy liability coverage on a track to $32k, then an umbrella policy never gets activated since that requires the normal policy limits (either $300k or $500k) to be hit first.

Sigh...

Excellent point and something I will review with my Insurance Company.
Thanks,

I read my full Amica policy every year when it gets renewed to make sure the language hasn't changed, because yes I too have noticed through several friends that many carriers are changing their language there. As for finding out before you sign up, I expect you could ask a carrier to give you a copy of their full policy prior to joining by saying you wanted to detailed cross-shopping.

As for paying out even with policies that have favorable language with respect to HPDEs, I accept that if I ever have a track-related claim, it's entirely possible my insurance will pay that out and then choose not to renew me, in fact I've heard some carriers have actually told customers asking about HPDEs in advance that they'd do exactly that. But as much as I'd hope to stick with my carrier, I would be ok with that outcome. Chances are if I have a big enough incident on a track that I feel the need to involve insurance (which I probably wouldn't do unless the damage was at LEAST $3K), then I'd probably stay away from the track for a while anyway. At any rate, even that would be better than USAA where multiple people have said that they were dropped for even calling to ASK about coverage.

Very true. From what I've seen reading my own policy and those of my friends on various carriers, the exclusion language with respect to this is typically identical for both comprehensive and liability. I haven't found one that keeps only one type of coverage in effect but not the other; you either have both or neither.

I guess you can look at this as a good or bad thing. Since the majority of events are 2+ days that I go to, and it seems like that's probably what the insurance policy is typically priced for, I always feel ripped off buying a policy for a one day event (luckily I don't do too many of those). I think it would be nice to have a price for one day, and a price for 2 plus days, but none of them do that.

Ouch. Sorry to hear that. If you don't mind, can you share a little more? Always nice to get stories from someone that's actually made use of the insurance.

Stumbled across this thread and thought I'd introduce myself. My name is Ryan Staub and I founded the Lockton Motorsports HPDE Insurance Program. We've been offering this coverage longer than anyone else. I put the program together after having a battle with my street insurance company to cover a total loss on my e36 M3 that happened at a track event.

I'm the Chief Instructor for the Kansas City Chapter of BMW CCA, do some Chump races, and some BMW CCA Club Racing. Hope to see you guys out there! If you ever have any insurance questions or suggestions on our insurance program, please let me know.

Keep the shiny side up!

1) As mentioned above, I assume your typical insurance is priced for 2 days (from an underwriting perspective). 1 day events shouldn't cost the same. I don't expect it to be 50% off the 2 day rate, but maybe 25% off.
2) To be blunt, your website kinda sucks and could use some development.
a) I've purchased the majority of my insurance for the R32, and just once bought for the M3. Yet every time I use my login it remembers the M3 info, even though I've more recently bought insurance for the R32.
b) The BMWCCA discount is completely non-transparent from what I can tell -- I can never be certain I'm getting a discount. Maybe make that more clear in the quote (i.e. here's what your quote would have been minus the BMWCCA discount equals your new policy amount).
