New to Chicagoland, when do you put on the snows

I officially moved to Chicago last Saturday. I usually don't put the snows on the car until sometime in Dec in NJ, when you guys start here?

Usually when we get the first "real" snow fall or when the temps drop below freezing.

Also, welcome to the area! Come say hello on ChitownM.com.

The winter tire manufacturers will tell you not to swap until the temperature is consistently below 45 F. The rubber compounds work better when cold, and especially on the cold pavement.

Historically that has been mid-November for me, though some years I've had to put them on a bit earlier or later. You'll notice that the summer tires will get very noisy and DSC will kick in at strange times. That's a sign that winter is coming. [/meme]

Haha like this morning! I was hoping to drive the M a bit longer but it seems to be starting early.

Note that I said CONSISTENTLY below 45 F. Of course it will get cold at night but it warms up when the sun comes out. Daytime temperatures need to be under 45 F for a week or so before you should think about swapping.

Usually, I do the swap on Nov. 1 and then back again on Apr. 1. However, a good cold run or the threat of snow gets me out there earlier. I just did my swap to winters this last weekend

they are sitting in the garage now. The M isnt getting winters, that car will sit in the garage and drive on sunny dry days only. I will be switching the 7's wheels next week when I come back from NJ.

Ive been swapping wheels on a few different cars since 06'. I average mid november, but was burned once, ONCE. i slid all over the place with my S4 one day, right into a few curbs. November 14!! good time to start thinking about wheels. Anyone know a guy who needs winter wheels and tires for their Audi?
