I heard the M4 is gonna have TCT. Triple Clutch Transmission

Because three clutches is better than two. AND

When one of the clutches fail, the car automatically drops one out of the transfer case.

Cool stuff.
Whatever, I'll have a QCT.

i would get the DCT in the m4 because they added that dumbass auto rev match shit to the manual....and boost lag shits...

maybe this is them intentionally swaying people away from MT....

Hmm....how do we get people to stop buying manuals?
Lets put auto rev match in the manual!
Great fucking idea! (instant promotion)

i do'nt know if ultra traditional and auto rev match go together.

maybe the M4 MT will also have one paddle for the autorev option like the c7 stingray...that way we can pretend to have dct

I think the choice might not be as easy on the F8X. They were able to shave some 26lbs off the manual tranny, meaning it will now have a 70+lbs advantage over the DCT...

The auto rev match could also be part (or byproduct) of the intricate system to maintain the turbos spooled when the throttle is lifted...

I am also eager to find out. But the gossip on the F8X forum seems to indicate that it will weigh the same

Are they using the reinforced DCT on the F10 M5/6? I thought that was heavier than the E9X M3 DCT?

I think it goes along the lines of piping exhaust noise into the car.

To be honest I've never been so unexcited about the roll out of a new 3 (now 4) series.

I am going with the M DCT regardless on my M4 order.I toyed with going with the 6 speed but the practicality of having a 2 pedal car in our household is a big deal. With the greater torque on the new F8x having 6 gears instead of 7 probably will not be as great performance difference ontrack as on the E9x M3.

I'll keep my E46 M3 if I want to row gears. The E9X M3 is extra fantastic with the DCT. And I'm sure subsequent generations will be even better.

+1 - I'm 30 year fan of the brand but the New 3 and 4 have me unexcited as well.

In the end, I remain confident M GmbH will continue to develop awesome cars and the DCT will get even better.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again:

Driving a manual does not make you any more of a Real Car Guy, or a Real BMW Guy, than a man driving a BMW two-pedal car.

Replacing a BMW manual (or just the clutch), in your own garage/driveway/what-have-you, is the only transmission-related exercise that elevates your status relative to other Real BMW Guys. I'm not sure, but I'm pretty certain I've heard of some Real BMW Gals that are capable of this special status as well.

I also believe that taking a car to the track -- any car, any HPDE -- qualifies you as a Real Car Guy or Gal, even if you only do it once, but that's debate-able.

And as for what to do about the DCT for the track, manual for the track question, I heartily suggest the solution I have undertaken: one of each, and preferably not both E92s, because where's the fun in that?

But ultimately, to each his or her own . . . .

not sure if any of you guys have spun your DCT car and possibly rolled backwards ... in 6MT you just go both feet in.. does the DCT have a protection against that or is there something else you do to prevent damage? not that I plan on going backwards at 80+mph... but ... just wondering for the OP's sake because I would never do that

I too am looking at going to an e90 and debating DCT vs MT.

thanks guys; good thread!

personal opinion here, but ive owned both and tracked 6mt but not yet my DCT (this November)

I think the DCT is a MUCH better match for this engine and car, as it needs to be kept on the boil to extract fun on the streets and track. I also didn't like the transmission on the e9x gen m3, especially compared to my old e46 m3

I cant wait to get my DCT on the track, im hoping it jacks up the fun factor and allows me to focus on honing my skills on the track. id recommend at least trying a DCT.

DCT is pretty unbeatable on the track. Solid in terns of reliability. The only issue I have come across is that the ability to run at full hp more of the time exacerbates the e9x's terrible cooling capacity.

The 991 GT3 will only come with a dual clutch, which has pissed a lot of people off - but it's hard to argue that they are not superior on the track. It's more challenging to drive a manual well on the track, so to me that makes them more fun.

When you spin the computer does everything for you. Just step on the brake. The first time I spun this car I stepped on a clutch that wasn't there which hurt my knee a little.

And you can drift it in manual mode no problem...

I have tracked both the MT and DCT...difference is negligible if you can rev-match downshift effectively. Actually there are 2 Fifth Gear episodes (2009 and 2013) with the Porsche Cayman PDK vs MT, and in both episodes while the PDK was faster in a straight line, the MT in both cases was slightly faster around the track. Point being that if not from a dig, it's pretty much a driver's race around a track assuming you know how to rev-match in an MT.
