Yes it's safe. Probably unnecessary but safe.

You will get rock chips everywhere. I've seen chips on the trunk lid even. There's too much stuff that can happen, unless you just want to wrap your whole car.

I had my roof clear bra'd when I had my car done by Premier the first weekend I had my car! No chips obviously and you can't tell it's there without looking really closely.

I'm glad I had it done and OP if chips bother you on the roof, it'll give you peace of mind.
I also hope it helps protect against toxic bird poo and the staining it can do to a rooftop.

The other day I was behind a small truck for a couple of seconds, right before I was to switch to the other lane a damn metal can flew off the truck but didn't hit the car luckily. When I got home and looked over the area apparently the damn can had spilled some sorta of glue that got stuck to the clear bra and because of the solvents on the glue it became part of it and would not come off. I had no choice but to peel the bra off. My paint was perfect and luckily hadn't been damaged by the glue/solvent because the 3M film was strong enough to prevent it from burning my paint. I immediately ordered a new bra from Raja and will be installing it as soon as I get it. I do the install myself so saving a few bucks there.

Clear bra works, greatest thing out there to protect your car.

Since you are in San Francisco, make the trip out to Premier. They do an excellent job although pricing is on the high side.

If you drive in north of US & Canada specially in winter then with all the road salt and gravel mix it feels like meteorite hitting your car. My E36 had few chipped spots on the roof.
