You could go with factory BMW cross bars and then one of these: http://yakima.com/shop/cargo/gear-baskets

Personally, I'd still put 1 or 2 wheels in the car.

Do you have fold-down rears? With those, an E90 or E92 can fit a full set in the back, even 19s. If you don't, roof rack is definitely the next best option, but I agree with the above post for weight limit reasons.

I saw someone with a roof setup for tires. It looked like a massive PIA and took a lot of effort to get the tires onto the roof without damaging your car. I kept thinking that the back seat was way easier even if I had to clean it later.

Exactly, although tire totes and wheel felts would minimize or even eliminate the need for cleaning.

i use the wheel totes and just bought a set of those wheel felts for them and dont like them at all. thought they would be rigid. they just flop around and not sure they are useful at all. was going to send them back. im used to using the circular cardboard that comes with wheels when packed.

You can get 8 wheels in the back seat. Not sure how many with a cage though.

i can barely fit my 4 wheels in the back because they have to lay flat. 2 in the rear seat area and 2 in the trunk area then everything else ends up in the passenger foot well and front seat.

I have an 8x10 heavy duty tarp with clip on anchors with thin rope and small karabiners to hook around the front and rear head rest posts. The extra width allows the doors to be protected too. I use red clips on the left and green on the right to help orient the tarp when loading up. The tarp provides more than enough covered trackside storage space. I also secure the tires with tie-downs hooked around the rear head rest posts.

One evasive move on the highway and it'll probably peel the cf roof off.

I'd be too embarrassed to drive this on the street. Nice looking Lemons car though.

I would look at getting a custom hitch installation and pulling a small trailer.

I had this exact same setup (and the same stickers as well, Soulspeed.com) on the E46M. It worked very very well, though putting the tires up there was a bit dicey (I never dropped one). I was also able to get 4 in the back seat, but that is actually more difficult to load and unload on the back and interior wear&tear. The whole thing, with wheels and tires, weighed about 165lbs, under the limit on the E46.

If you are in texas, I still have the setup in a garage at TWS in college station.

PS - to the point about the missile - don't kid yourself, you put anything in the interior that is not locked down it it's coming through you and the front windshield (ask me how I know). I'd rather have it fly off the roof.
