Get him a Saturn and donate the rest to charity. JK LOL The A4 would be nice for the AWD and you could put some winter boots on it if you live in the cold weather. I had an S4 and the AWD is pretty cool and the car is rated Safe...even better than the BMW. Plus, if you get him the 2.0t you can do a little power upgrade when you think he is ready. Take him to the local Audi Club and get him involved in AutoX to hone his driving skills. That is what I did and my 17 year old is a great driver. However, he lacks the experience and that is what makes me nervous. BTW I bought him a 06 S2000. Sometimes he lets me drive it. I love the car....maybe better than the 335i.

Honestly you cannot base your opinion of what you buy your son by anyone here. Only you know your son best. If you think that he will be a reliable, safe driver, and will appreciate the car you will buy him, then get him a decent car. If you aren't sure you can trust him just yet, then don't do it. Everyone raises their kids differently, and I would go with my fatherly instinct and decide how I felt.

Yup. If you think your son is responsible and won't drive like an idiot, then get him a nice car. (Multiple options depending on your income and what you feel like spending)
1)Give him your car and get something more fun for yourself. (M3, Z4M, Cayman, etc.)
2) Get him a used e46 or B6 Audi.
3) Get him a 128 when it comes out.

If you think he's irresponsible and will drive like an ass, get him a (used) Civic.

I would get him a Civic regardless of how he is. Why buy him such an expensive car, even if you believe he deserves it? At such a young age, no matter his attitude or whatever, he's going to ding it up. Let him ding up a Civic, and then after awhile, buy him a BMW or whatever else you have in mind.

A 16 or 17 year old, no matter how spoiled, deserving, etc. should drive a beater, because that's exactly what's going to happen to the car.

Why is everyone here recommending German cars? Honestly, as a starter car, you really can't beat a Jap car. Hondas, Mazdas, Nissans...they all have a better bang-for-you-buck value when it comes to buying something in the sub-$20k market.

I still suggest that you buy him either a Civic, Mazda3, Sentra/Altima, or even a Mitsu Lancer. Hell, the Lancer even has flappy paddles.

Or you could get him an older Bimmer. It'll probably cost more and have older safety features. It's up to you. How much does he value "the ultimate driving experience"? Is it really worth it? I'm just trying to view the situation from an objective POV is all.

Bullshit, my car doesn't have one ding on it that was avoidable. The only chips/dings are from rocks on the highway which you either have to live with or not drive the car. Though our paint does seem really soft.

Volvo S40 ... super safe, not too expensive, great on gas, 4 doors to put friends and other shit in. ... my girlfriend has one and its a great car ... I drive it all the time.

If thats too expensive then I agree with the others and say get him a Civic. I had a Jeep Charokee for my first car and then two trucks and a civic as my 4th car ... I loved that thing .. great on gas ... fun to customize ... not too fast ..

I know you said he dosent want a Japanese car .. but at 16 you beat the shit out of what ever your driving ... I did went I was 16 and so did all my friends .. we where all big car guys ... Japanese cars handle the beating better then German "Lux" cars as they are simple mechanically and cheap to repair.

If he's a responsible kid, and deserves a nice car, let him choose what he wants. But I can say one thing, I'm 23 years old, have owned a used 94 integra, a 2004 mazda3 and finally a 335 sedan...and there is nothing like buying and owning the car you really want. It is also nice to have room to "upgrade"...if he has TOO nice of a car as his first car, it is only natural that he will want something better as his second car. I can say this though...i would have loved an e46 at 17!

At that age, I think driving a "nice" car is nothing but an ego booster. You do nothing but impress your peers and tell others that you are either spoiled or your parents have money. Now I don't know your son and whether you feel he "deserves" something like that at his age, but I can only speak from my experiences.

When I started driving at 16 I drove a brand new Toyota 4runner... Felt like a million bucks and had lots of fun commuting to school. My folks got it because it was big (read: safe) and functional. It wasn't mine tho -- it was the family car and the only time I got to drive it was to and from school. Tough luck on the weekends because my folks had it then and never got to enjoy it at those times.

Through college I drove a 99 Camry (also a family car and which recently crapped out on me), and now I drive an 87 E30 325 everyday to work.

A few months ago, I pulled the trigger on a 335i. Why? Because I feel I DESERVE it at this point in my life. I've finished school, gotten a degree, work my arse off to pay my bills and all I've got to show for it is the chipping paint on my 87 bimmer? I don't think so, or at least not until my CA calls me to pick my car up when it arrives.

My point is this -- go conservative. Don't inflate his ego w/a hot german hell raiser. Keep him grounded at that age and he'll appreciate everything he works for and achieves later on in life.

For me, (as cliche as this sounds), the car I bought really is a symbol. And it represents my achievements and hard work at this point in my life.

good luck making your choice, just remember, bmw ftw

wait it out and tell him you'll get him a nice car when he gets into a great school... on top of that, make sure he gets some scholarships too -- that way, there's no real ding in your wallet, and your son is happy

A new enough truck to have good safety features. What young guy does not like a truck with a cutie sitting next to him?
It never hurts to have a truck in the family either. No Texas jokes....
