M///azing 5618 Mile Euro Delivery
Featured on BIMMERPOST.com Hey everyone its been awhile since i posted something on the forums. Some of you may remember me as the guy who did that crazy 10,000 mile European delivery back in 2011 [journal thread]. I haven't posted much since then because well i had nothing to post about, my 335IS was totaled one year after it came to the US and since then its been a bit of a wild ride for me. However i come bearing good news. When i did the ED with the IS i had the time of my life and after posting the write up online you guys seemed to enjoy my story as well, so it seemed like i had only one choice when it came down to getting another car: ANOTHER BMW EURO DELIVERY! First ill provide a little backstory for those of you who are interested. Some of you might not care how everything went down so feel free to skip ahead to the delivery and go on from there. In June 2011 i got my IS and in September of 2012 she was gone. I would have liked to keep that car a bit longer because i really did love it but the universe had different things in mind for me. One night coming back from work at 2am i was driving down a local road with the right of way in my favor and as i was coming up to an intersection at 35-40mph out of nowhere pops out a black Toyota Highlander with its lights off. After the the initial shock of the accident wore off i realized the driver was heavily intoxicated as did the cops who arrived on the scene. After administering a breathalyzer test the guy blew double over the legal limit and got hauled off to jail. I came out of the whole thing with only a sprained thumb, many thanks to BMW for making such a safe car. Immediately after the accident i started thinking of my next car. I knew i wanted to do another Euro delivery and because summer tires in europe during the winter don't mix well i decided to bide my time. In the meantime i had to get some wheels. Most of my close friends are car guys and they felt really bad about what happened to me and my car, but one of my friends (Paul) went beyond the call of duty and gave me his car. His car was the best substitute for my car anyone can ask. It was a 2001 E39 M5 with quite a bit of work done to it such as straight pipes all the way back. THIS THING IS A BEAST!!! It was the first ///M that i ever drove for an extend period of time and it made me realize that i was missed an ///M of my own. So i came to the conclusion that i will get the last of the NA beasts, THE 2013 E92 M3!! I call the only guy in the Tristate area with the balls to make my dream happen with no fuss no muss. Every dealer is saying this and that about how hard it is to get an M3 because of this or that but not my boy NICK SOLDO. He made it happen and for a great price at that. I really recommend him if you're tired of negotiating with salesmen whose interest is making a quick buck off of you. Nick made sure i got the date and time i wanted, April 22nd 2013 at 10:00am. Last time i went on my ED with my best friend David but this time i had to take with me the most important person in my life, MY MOM. She always works hard and never has any real fun so i decided to treat her to a trip around europe to see what shes been missing out on. April 20th Im picking up the car on a monday so i left on that friday night to get to Munich so i have some time to get over jet lag. My mom was already in Poland at the time, she got an extra week of vacation than i did so she was just over there relaxing. We decided to meet up in the hotel in Munich however completely by chance we ran into each other at the airport picking up our bags, and that to be quite honest really set the tone for how well everything worked out on this trip. After getting to the hotel we dropped our bags and headed straight for the Welt. I've been talking about it for 2 years and finally got to show her what i was on about. She was just as amazed upon seeing it as i was the first time. After snapping a couple pictures we went back to the hotel and passed out. April 21st This was our first chance to really see Munich. The first ED i did was a bit rushed in the beginning and i didn't get to see it that time, but man am i happy i did it this time. Munich is simply awesome. It really is a huge city but its so well taken care of and so clean. We went to Olympia park, Marienplatz, took a nice walk by the river and even went back to the Welt because we couldn't get enough. Anyone doing an ED should really have at least one day to explore some of Munich. I could have stayed in Olympia park the whole day itself. We didn't stay out too late however because we were picking up the car the next day and needed some rest. April 22nd Man that was a long wait! We were the first ones in the Welt that morning. We headed upstairs to take care of the paperwork and had some breakfast, after that we went to go buy some gifts with our vouchers quickly. We didn't want to stay downstairs too long however because i wanted to make sure we catch a glimpse of the car when its coming up the elevator. Sure enough after camping out for a bit it came into view. Words cannot describe how beautiful this car is in Interlagos blue. It is simply perfect. After yelling at Hans from the balcony for slamming my door we went to the top of the stairway to heaven and waited for our delivery specialist Michael Steuer. Michael who was a really cool guy showed us the car, took some pictures, and we were off. First stop Warsaw, Poland. I wanted to put on some miles on the car quickly so i can get past the break in period and also see my friends and family in Poland. April 23rd-26th We spend a few days in Poland but not nearly as much as i would have liked. Hung out with some old friends, some of you who read my past write up might see a familiar face. At the end of my stay in Poland Marta and I went to go get the car serviced together and while in service i decided to ask how much my M3 would cost in Poland, 150K!! But wait a minute, they also had a M3 CRT in the showroom with a sticker price of 200K US DOLLARS!!! I should have figured though because while walking around i noticed a heli pad in front of the dealer. I thought however it was just for show. Well sure enough a few minutes later i see 4 helicopters land one after another with people coming out to go look at some Rolls Royces which were in the connecting showroom. THATS! how you come to buy a car people lol. After service i drop off Marta, pick up my bags and my mom and head to our next stop Prague. On the way to Prague i had the biggest grin on my face for what felt like hours. It was to the point that my face started cramping up, thats how happy i was lol. Man this car is something special and you really begin to understand it after the break in period. Highway cruising at 120mph is done with no effort. Its like sitting on a cloud, this suspension is a work of art. Then came my first taste of some twisties crossing from Poland into the Czech Rep. M settings set to highest in everything and i punch it. Holy hell this thing handles. I was in a state of trance while driving it but it was dark so i pull back a little. After crossing the border we had a bit of a scare. The gps was showing me there was a highway but the on ramp did not exist. Allow me to paint you a picture. We are in the middle of nowhere on roads that seemed to be getting worse and worse with every passing mile. On top of that i have a slew of woodland critters jumping out on the road all the time (thankfully i was only going 15mph at this point) but thats not the worse thing. It was a friday in eastern europe!! So what? You may ask. Well let me tell you that no one parties quite like eastern european people on their farms, you just never know what to expect and me being in this situation knowing what i know i was expecting the worst. After driving by a few drunk Czech trolls which did their best job at scaring the living shit out of my mom i finally find an on ramp and get on the highway. The only consolation i had during this time was that i had plenty of gas. After getting on the highway i got pissed off at the fact that we got sidetracked and i hit. 160mph on a completely empty highway got us to Prague quickly. April 27th Objective for Prague: Walk it out. Screw public transport, the only way to see a city is to walk it. We do a monster 18 mile loop in and around Prague. Seeing all the castles and bridges our hearts desired. It really is a beautiful city but if you travel to Prague make sure to buy comfortable shoes because their sidewalks and roads are all cobblestone. April 28th No time to waste people. Next destination, Salzburg. Hold on though i can't leave the Czech Rep without getting a ticket right lol? The cops were really nice actually. I should have gotten a much bigger penalty because i was going well over 100mph. These guys were behind me for quite some time chasing me without me even knowing until i looked in my rearview. Like i said though cool guys so they didn't give me a ticket for speed but they got me for not having the Vinette (I thought you only needed one in Austria). They took a few pictures of the car and let us go. I decided i wanted to take the long way to Salzburg so we went to Vienna for lunch and then took back roads from there stopping very briefly in Hallstatt. Alps is where this car belongs and i wanted to spend as much time there as i possibly could driving those awesome side roads. April 29th We did a lot of driving the previous day so now its time to do some walking again. Staying with the theme thus far we do and nice loop of Salzburg by foot and took a nice hike up one of the big hills in the city to get a better look at the castle. One thing that sticks out in this city is that all the trams and buses run on electricity, it has a crazy network of wires running above your head. They better hope their power doesn't go out because they’ll be out of luck lol. April 30th Another plus of Salzburg is that its close to a lot of cool places. So we decide to take a day trip to a few. First stop was none other than Neuschwanstein castle. That didn't go so well because there was some low lying clouds and fog so i couldn't get a picture but it was nice to remind myself of my last time there. Small consolation though was getting a picture close to Schwangau castle. Anyway on to the next place Krimml falls. We try to take a crazy mountain road that was said to be open which turned out to be false for no good reason. GODDAM IT i said. The view was nice but i got pissed off and out of frustration did a donut at the summit to bring some happiness into this crappy day so far (BMW douche quota filled / flame suit on lol). After backtracking we get to Krimml falls. This waterfall is HUGE! and best of all you can walk right up to it without anyone yelling at you. Nice european freedom. After that we head back. May 1st Next stop Parma. I chose Parma because it was close to a few places we wanted to see but not stay at. Looking at it in retrospect the geographic location was good but the city is complete crap (no offense to anyone from Parma). Again i thought my mom would see more stuff and i would have more fun driving down to Italy using mainly local roads, BEST DECISION EVER! Along the way we stumble upon one of the nicest little lake / towns i've seen my whole time in europe. Auronzo di Cadore was such a nice off the beaten path town with a huge dam and enormous mountain peaks. We made ourselves a little picnic, did a little hiking to stretch the legs and kept going deeper into the Italian alps. May 2nd This was a “ME” day. My mom basically joined me in seeing my attractions. First thing up Maranello, Italy to see the Ferrari museum. Along the way something completely unexpected happened that was one of the highlights of the trip for me. While driving through the city i see “Test Drive”. I go into full little boy mode and ask my mom if she can wait while i go drive a Ferrari lol. She happily obliged while taking pictures. My Ferrari of choice 458 ITALIA! I could write about the car for pages but here are the cliff notes. ITS A MONSTER. This thing is sex on wheels. Taking that car up to 140mph on Italian side roads (with an instructor hanging on for dear life next to me) was quite the experience. But we all have to wake up from our dreams and after 30 min mine was over. No time for pouting, next stop Lambo museum. Lamborghinis museum was great and low key, not the tourist attraction that Ferraris was and to be honest i prefer it a hundred times over. Final destination for the day and arguably the most important for me was Imola. Many of you may not be familiar with Imola or why its famous/infamous but it was the place where the best F1 driver of all time Ayrton Senna died. It was the 19th anniversary of his death that day and me being the huge F1 fan that i am wanted to go there and pay my respects. I strongly suggest you look up the short piece that Top Gear did on him and if you enjoy it i also highly recommend the recent documentary that came out about him. May 3rd All is fair, now its time for my mom to have “HER” day. She always talked about how much she loves the riviera / mediterranean coast and what better way to get a taste of it then by going to Portofino, Italy. So on the way from Parma to our next destination Lausanne Switzerland we go there. The road going there was a bit nerve racking because it was incredibly tight and so was the town but the cities leading up to it as well as Portofino were very picturesque. This was my moms dream and she was living it which made both of us happy. While in Portofino we took a hike up to its castle and got a spectacular view of not only it but the whole town as well. After the hike we had the most expensive dinner of our lives which thankfully was as tasty and well prepared as it was pricey. We left and another dream ended. May 4th Lausanne was really nice as was our hotel but we had other things in mind. First thing up was a short drive to Lac Souterrain St Leonard which was a big underground lake. I love caves and my mom loves them too but has never been in one so time to cross that off the list. Unfortunately it was dark and unless you do a long exposure with a gyroscope no one is getting a good picture of it but i caught a few blurry ones that hopefully give you guys some idea of what it looked like. I must say its genuinely serene and peaceful. Next destination was Zermatt / Matterhorn. The objective was to go paragliding. We were both super excited but the snow had made it impossible to start off so we drove back to Lausanne disappointed. No matter though because the next day i had planned a small amount of adrenaline to make up for it. Destination Brussels, Belgium via the Nurburgring. May 5th We headed out early towards Brussels because i knew the track would be open and i wanted to see my old friend Jeorg and maybe squeeze in a lap. We stop at the ring and i see there is a track closure, DAMMIT! O well we go to the Rent for Ring garage by the Nurburgring because Jeorg told me he'd be around there but he wasn't. No matter i start chatting it up with the guys that run the agency. These guys were not only extremely knowledgeable in terms of cars, racing and the Ring but also authentically friendly. After some time Jeorg comes back with plates, it turns out that it was one of the rent for ring cars that crashed. Sad but thats part of the Ring and after the short clean up the track opened up again. I thought of going out but with all the bags in the car i was a bit hesitant, one of the guys who was in the garage (not a customer or worker) by the name of Dave who was just chatting with the guys too said hes going to do a lap and said that i should join, i answer with an emphatic HELL YESS! Dave’s car was a track build lotus with an engine swap. Suffice it to say that thing flew around the track like a bat outta hell and in the hands of Dave who did well over 2000 laps of the Ring it was like being in a roller coaster. We did a few laps and headed back, but i couldn't leave yet i needed to get it out of my system so i put in one lap, the car felt unbalanced and i decided that i'm spoiling the experience of an M3 doing it this way with all the junk in the car so after one lap we kept heading to Brussels. I wasn't too upset because we were coming back a couple days later anyway. May 6th After getting some oil my mom and I were in the mood for a more low key city so we opted to take a short drive to Brugge and leave Brussels for the following day. Brugge was very nice, small but it had a nice ambiance to it. Not really too touristy and thats the way we like it. We spent most of the day there and headed back to Brussels. We made the trip back pretty quickly so we still had some time to take in some sights around Brussels. 2 Cities in one day, not too shabby. We probably should have split it up and stayed more in both but we didn't feel like we missed too much. May 7th Brussels was pretty spaced out so we packed the bags and drove to a couple places around the city that we couldn't get to by foot the day before. One of them was the Atomium. However while driving there we saw a beautiful cathedral and while driving i whipped out the camera and started taking pictures while driving (not my brightest moment) i slowed down noticeably and after taking some shots i look in my rearview to see if there are any mad people behind me; indeed there were, not people but cops. “Crap i'm going to get pulled over” i said to my mom and sure enough the lights go on. I pull off and the cops starts asking about the car, i show him all the paperwork but they couldn't get their head around the Euro Delivery process. I did my best to explain it to them and they actually apologized for stopping me. They really loved the car and took a couple pictures with it. What happened next was pure awesomeness. The street i pulled into was really crappy and i asked if i could just back up the one-way. This was illegal but they humoured me, that wasn't it though. I told them during the stop that i was going to the Atomium so they decided to give me a FULL POLICE ESCORT! Lights and sirens, the whole nine yards. I LOVE BELGIUM. After snapping a few more pics in Brussels we were off to Germany again. We got back to the Ring in time for me to put in a few laps. My mom loves to drive fast too so i heard no objections from her when it came to racing. She did EVERY SINGLE LAP with me over the next few days. It was damp to say the least in the beginning but as the track dried up and i got a feel for the car it started to get better and better. Again i could write endlessly about this car but what is there to say that hasn't already been said by everyone with the faintest knowledge of cars. This thing is meant for turns. The steering and suspension are masterpieces. The engine leaves me with a lack of superlatives, the wide rev range along with its smooth power delivery is something else. This was all a warm up for the next day though. May 8th The previous night i spent some more time with the guys at the Rent For Ring garage as well as Jeorg and we looked at some videos to try and see where my mistakes were. They really had some great tips, these guys are REAL DRIVERS. I took their advice to heart but theres one thing that i didn't listen to them about, and that was not to go on the Grand Prix track. Come on though i can't be this close and not drive on a real F1 track. So i bought a ticket for one 20 minute session and went for it. The track lay out is much easier to remember compared to the Ring but their warning came to fruition within a short amount of time. One thing was the car just started to run hot, another was the fact that my brakes would boil and warp if i went too crazy lap after lap, and finally the last biggy was the tires. The GP track just eats tires, which is a big reason why the guys at Rent For Ring along with many other agencies don't rent out cars to race on the GP track. Its a car killer. I didn't know the racing line perfectly but nonetheless i had plenty of fun chasing around a F430 and blowing by a lot of people. No accidents or close calls just bald tires. May 9th Well this is it, the last day of the trip. Finishing up strong at the Ring. At this point i have a great feel for the car. The Ring opens up but again its a bit damp which sucked because this was the day that i was supposed to rent a stage 2 Subaru BRZ from the guys and see how i did with that but due to the conditions i just didn't feel comfortable driving a car that i didn't know. The guys were really cool about it though which was really appreciated. I decided that i still wanted to go out just to get some laps under my belt. I knew i would have to take it easy but i just wanted to keep going. To my surprise the track actually started drying up a bit. What the hell lets push a bit. I put in a couple real good quality laps in at this point and i started to remember some of the more difficult turns. I pit in for a bit to let the car cool down but i still had 2 laps left. I go out and this was the moment that i put in the lap of my life. My mom and me in the M3 chasing a Porsche 911 and a C6 Corvette while Jeorg was taking pictures. They were both track cars but man did my stock M3 hang with them. I actually felt like i could have taken them in a few corners but decided to spare my mom the stress of overtaking at 150mph. I took a video but the Gopro doesn't do the lap justice. It just doesn't show the speed or proximity like in real life but you can get an idea. After another quick cool down session i say to myself one more calm lap and then its over. That was almost the worst decision i made of my life. Up to this point it was all going perfect but i just couldn't get enough and stop. It started out as a calm lap but i was still riding a high of confidence after my previous lap and all i needed was a Porsche GT3 RS 4.0 blowing past me to make me lose my self control and start chasing him. I stuck with him for a brief moment and then trying to go into a turn i completely miss an apex and start understeering off the track. It started pushing wide but i knew i had some room to work with and i kept her steady, however we hopped the curb and go on the damp grass, my butt hole as well as my moms started whistling at this point but there was just enough room for me to make it and drive back off the grass onto the track. I pull of quickly to make sure i didnt crack the bumper or the oil sump. NO DAMAGE thank goodness. The rest of the lap i drove like a grandma and counted my lucky stars. Me, my mom and the car had enough. I needed to go back one more time to the Rent for Ring garage just to say bye to the guys and thank them for their hospitality. Little did i know that my adventure wasn't over just yet. I asked the guys to take a group picture but they saw my demeanor changed and asked what happened. I embarrassingly told them and they said that they won't let things end this way, “You can't leave the Ring on a bad note” they said. So what did they do to cheer me up? THEY BROUGHT OUT THEIR BEST CAR!!! A fully built, professionally tuned by the owner (a pro race car driver) M3 track monster!!! “We’re taking you around the ring the way its meant to be done”. My taxi driver was none other than Ralph Beck, a guy who has done over 10,000 laps of the ring. DAMN that guy can drive. After that lap i learned 2 things: 1) that i suck lol 2) the M3 is even better than i thought it was. Happier than i've ever been in my life we leave. Last stop was Dortmund to see another girlfriend of mine Vanessa and then off to Frankfurt to drop the car off the next day. May 10th We give the car back in the morning with knots in our stomach and sightsee one last city; Frankfurt. 5618 MILES and the journey is over. See you in six weeks. June 25 Nick calls me up and tells the most wonderful thing i could have heard “YOUR CAR IS HERE”!!! I go pick her up and i've been falling in love with this BEAUTIFUL work of art that i'm happy to call my car more and more everyday. Nurburing video F1 track Video One last shout out to Nick Soldo of Rallye Bmw, Dale Lomas and the whole RENT4RING crew, Jeorg Jakowski for your amazing pictures, and of course my friend Paul who made this whole transition easier than i could have hoped. Thanks for reading. Questions, comments, critiques are welcomed. |

Looks like you picked up 2 days after me, and stayed much longer! My plates were M2038Z... 6 ED cars were delivered between yours and mine and we dropped off in the same place (that Frankfurt spot is a weird drop point).
Great report! Wish I had that kind of time to cover more ground. After the first week, I felt like I was just getting started!

Great write up and gotta agree you seem to be quite a ladies man. The brunette in the last pic was was gorgeous. I used to live in queens a few years ago as well. Right off utopia parkway and 73rd avenue two blocks from St Johns University.
