LA -> Vegas Race... E92 vs JetBlue

If you live in the LA area and like Vegas, you've probably had the discussion before as to which is quicker. Yes, the flight is just over an hour, and driving is around 4. But door to door, is it actually quicker?

My girlfriend is heading to Vegas for work on Aug 17th, and I've been watching plenty of old Top Gear episodes, so I got the idea to do a race. She'd fly, and I'd drive.

We would leave early Saturday morning - avoiding most traffic (also coincides with her flight).

The start time for us would be in the house - She'd call a cab, and I'd run down to the car and get rolling.

For her, here's the breakdown of time:
  1. 0:00 - Call the cab
  2. 0:15 - Get picked up and drive to the airport
  3. 0:30 - Checkin / Go through Security / Wait for plane to take off
  4. 1:45 - Fly
  5. 3:00 - Get luggage
  6. 3:20 - Take a cab to the hotel
  7. 3:50 - Arrive at hotel

For me:
  • 0:00 - Run down to car and get on the road
  • 0:05 - Drive 126mi to Barstow for fuel (avg 68mph - getting out of LA)
  • 1:55 - Fuel
  • 2:05 - Back on road to Vegas (152mi remaining - avg 86mph - mostly highway)
  • 3:50 - Arrive at hotel

These new estimates are based on Google, so obviously I'll be faster than that:
  • 0:00- Start (0 mi)
  • 0:05 - Leave House (0 mi)
  • 0:17 - Reach 105 (10.7 mi)
  • 0:21 - Reach 605 (15 mi)
  • 0:39 - Reach 210 (33.2 mi)
  • 1:04 - Reach 15 (60 mi)
  • 1:33 - Palmdale Rd in Victorville (92.5 mi)
  • 2:00 - Barstow Rd in Barstow (125.6 mi)
  • 2:51 - Death Valley Rd (HW 127) (188.6 mi)
  • 3:31 - Cross into Nevada (238 mi)
  • 4:00 - Pass 215 in Vegas (272.9 mi)
  • 4:06 - Arrive at Aria Valet (277.3 mi)

There's a slight chance she might have to go mid-week which would cancel this idea, but otherwise I'm planning on doing it - and documenting it as best I can.

If anyone else feels like heading out to Vegas that weekend you are welcome to tag along as well!

Thoughts?

EDIT: I've updated the breakdown to be a little more detailed.

Which airport is she flying out of?
Jet Blue out of Long Beach is damn fast to get through security. The new terminal is awesome too. LAX would give you an extra hour.

You shouldn't need to stop for gas. I drove from Seal Beach to LV just last weekend on a tank. I even had a 1.5hr traffic jam along the way (start stop came in handy).
There's a lot of CHP on Sat morning. That's when I got my ticket in the past, so be careful. Just never be the fastest out there, especially if your by yourself. Let them radar the cars in front of you. They totally sit just at an overpass just outside the Barstow outlet. You can see the trail down the backside of that over pass where they drive down the dirt to get on the freeway after clocking you.

This should be very cool. keep us updated.

I call BS. It takes longer to drive from the westside of LA to LV. Also, I'll never drive to Vegas ever again no matter the flight cost. I got 4 tickets in one day 2 in CA 2 in NV.

Drove to Vegas and back the last two weekends for sons bball tourneys. Basically 91 and 55 in OC. 4 hrs up with one stop for gas and food. Coming home best I could do was 3:15 with only a gas stop. It is all about the time. Coming home is quicker especially if you leave Vegas early Sunday morning. I think I averaged about 75. At times I hit 85. Oh yeah and that was in the wife's Jeep. Have a radar detector and all the cops on that stretch only use KA band. Have fun.

Yeah, it would be great for me if she was heading out of LAX. Unfortunately it's LBC. The new terminal is definitely light years ahead of the old one for sure. Here's a pic I took last time I was there:

I had the idea of throwing something in her purse that would hold her up at security (without getting her in any trouble)... But then I realized, it actually won't hold her up at all. She'll be at the airport at the same time, and the plane is taking off at the same time, sooooo no luck there!

I was wondering if I could make it. I'll obviously give it a shot, but I think it'll be cutting it close.

What exactly are you calling BS on?

I know there's plenty of chance for traffic to hold me up... it once took me 11 hours to get home on a Sunday afternoon. But if it's all clear, I figured it could be a fun game to play!

And 4 tickets in 1 day? I'm guessing what went through your head as you sped off after the 3rd one was something along the lines of "I've already gotten 3 speeding tickets... what are the chances of getting a fou... GDI!"

I've done Vegas to San Diego in 4 hrs with one fuel/piss stop in a 350z. It's very possible.

OP the V1 worked brilliantly for me on that trip.

be careful with the aircraft tickets. I was clocked going 104mph right before Vegas, Henderson i think the city was called. I was trusting my V1 too much and the freeway was empty. It was an expensive lesson to say the least

I've done it... From OC to Vegas. The quickest I had was 3:00 but I seem to average around 3:30.

-use the V1
- let other cars be your "white rabbit" or shield by letting others be slightly faster.
- watch for brake lights
-use Waze so others can spot for you
-areas where cops are is Barstow just before the outlets, Henderson, and just before you get to Vegas
- keep a look out for air patrol

If you could use a different car that blends in that's better ie 6th generation silver Honda accord sedan or beige Camry... But where's the fun in that

OP, you should be able to make it on a tank pretty easily.
There was an accident that caused a 10 mile back-up (1.5 hrs) and I still had gas to drive around a little when I got to Vegas. I think I averaged 18 mpg when I calculated at the pump- 290 miles with 16 gallons of gas.
