Rear Tyres - Wear rates and pressures?

Hi All,

What's everyone's experience with the wear rate on their rear tyres? My current rears have only done about 4000Kms, and the outsides are almost worn to the tread wear indicators. Have always kept the pressure at 300kPa (43-44 psi). Am now thinking that the rear pressures need to be higher (320kPA?). The fronts are fine (270kPa, 39psi).

Thoughts? Experiences?

You're running 38 psi and getting even wear? Road tyres? Done any track days on them?

Sorry, by "outsides" I meant both edges of the tyre (so inside edge and outside edge). The centre is fine, which makes me think the tyre pressure is too low, otherwise I'd expect the tyre to wear a lot more evenly.

I'm wondering if it's normal for these cars to eat rear tyres more quickly than fronts? I recall a conversation with another owner who said he replaces rear tyres more often.

That is weird as it would indicate pressure is too low. What brand tyres are they and have you had a recent alignment? Maybe they've got weak sidewalls and they're buckling on corners?

I've always run my cars at 38-39. Current tyres on the M3 are Conti 5P. My wear is really even, perhaps a tiny bit more on the front which would be from the track sessions. It's surprising because I run max camber and have tracked these tyres a few times when I haven't been able to get the slicks on. The inside edge of mine is worn the same as the outside edge, so maybe it is related to alignment/neg-camber and hard cornering

I agree, I run mine at 44 psi rear and 39 psi front, done about 25K including several track days and the inside rears are just coming down to the markers now. Sound like alignment - I have mine done every 6 months and the life has been really better than expected

Definitely get a wheel alignment, and get one regularly. As Dave posted, I agree, every 6 months is a good idea.

Thanks all for the input. Sounds like it's time to get an alignment done as it's been over a year since the last one.

The current tyres are Kumho KU31's. As a road tyre, I'm happy with them and rate them better than the Pirelli P-Zeros I had just prior (terrible understeer in the wet). Did a track day yesterday at Morgan Park (first time there, great fun), and after two laps I was starting to slide about. So, not a good tyre for the track.

Any recommendations on a shop to do the alignment in Brisbane? Or does everyone just take their car to their local franchise (Bob J, Beaurepaires, Tyre Power, etc...)?

Mike doesn't do them himself but will advise you who is good. Mike is ex BMW and specialises in our cars plus Audi/VW. Highly recommended in Brisbane.

Hey mate, are they stock 18 or 19" rims? I think KU31's are a mid tier tyre, but looking at their specs, they don't seem to make the correct sizes for OEM rear rims.

So you might be running a thinner or narrower tyre which might explain your wear troubles. The M3 also requires high load-rated tyres which narrows the choice of available tyres significantly. Perhaps you're running the wrong size tyres and throw in a couple track sessions and they're feathered and smashed?

Yeah, it's an independent tyre shop near his workshop I think. They seem to do a good job

They're 19's, and the rears are 275/35, so slightly wider than standard fitment. The load rating is 100, and speed rating is Y, which exceeds manufacturer requirements for load and meets for speed (98Y). I was sceptical before I bought, and made a phone call to BMW HQ in Melbourne, who advised the tyre is suitable and no issues with the width and speedo readings.

I've had Michelins and Pirelli's on the car, and have now given Kumho's a go. Who knows, I might try something else next (but not Pirelli's!!).

Anyway, I'll likely get the alignment checked. Thanks for the input.

Thanks for that. I actually sent an enquiry to him last week but, unfortunately, didn't get a reply. Perhaps I should just stop by to get his thoughts?

Yes, Mike is super busy and they are in the process of changing addresses due to growth. It's worth persisting, he is an excellent performance guy and has experience with M3s. He does our SC and exhaust installs too and does a great job.


Your rears tyres are only 1% bigger than stock with a side wall increase of 3.8% (according to the tire calculator app) so it's well within range. It claims your speedo error is 1% higher so it has to be your alignment.

Checkout the michelin super sports, I've never tried them, but they receive great feedback

I run 10" race wheels with 275 slicks and found I can't run any wider otherwise the sidewalls buckle and get sloppy. Usually 265 is the widest recommended for a 9.5" rim, so it might be a factor if the KU31's have a softer sidewall

What problem did you have with pirelli out of interest?

why do u guys run such high pressures on the road (track is another matter) when the doorcard specifies 35psi?

also whats wrong with the pirellis?

Yes, I'd like to know what's wrong with PZeros too, I was considering them for the next set. I love my MPS2 but can't get them now.

On the tyre placard option on the rear is 3 bar (44 psi) /2.7 bar (39 psi) for 4 passengers. Due to excellent wear and handling I'm happy to run these pressures

Compared with Michelin's I had, my experience with Pirelli's was that the car would understeer terribly in the wet, to the point I felt they were dangerous. Understeering off a small roundabout towards the kerb at 20kph was my first "what the?" moment. I baby my car on the road, and a couple more incidents in the wet (with young kids in the back seat) made up my mind. Behaviour in the dry was fine. I also found they weren't as good as the Michelin's at the track.

So, anecdotal evidence only (and maybe I just happened to have back luck with Pirellis), but I know I won't buy them again and am happy to experiment with other tyres to find the ones I like.

Hmm I never had many positives things about the KU31's on my previous car other than the fact they were cheap!

The tyre noise drove me insane, and it was a world of difference when I went from the kumhos to continental sport 3's in terms of road noise, grip and wet weather performance!

I've ordered some Michelin Pilot Super Sports, so can't wait to see how they go.

Apparently they're now the OEM tyre on the current M5 -
