M3 to F10? (Advice thread)

To start, I love my M3. Never thought about selling it until now.

My significant other will be moving in with me soon, and will be sharing one car (I live in NYC). She can't drive a manual transmission.

She is careful with her car that she has now, and is willing to learn to drive it, but I am not sure it's a good idea in Manhattan.

Secondarily, I have a new side consulting business that allows me to expense business items, including a lease on a car (my M3 is owned outright).

So options are:
1. Trust that she will learn and drive my M3 in NYC.
2. Sell the car and find a DCT M3 sedan
3. Lease a car such as F10 535
4. Lease or buy something else (A6, S4, used E63 AMG).

I do enjoy tracking my car so an SUV is out of the question.

Thanks again,
Neel

If you really like the M3, teach her how to drive... My wife can double clutch almost as fast as I can...

DCT E90 for sure. I'm a 6MT guy as well, but under the circumstances I'd make that switch.

Learning to drive a manual transmission M3 in Manhattan, no.

F10 5 series, nah. You track.

Given your situation lease another BMW, not the 535.

I can't believe you would actually think of getting rid of your M because she can't drive stick. Smh..

Wouldn't want to teach her MT in an M3. Too many things can go wrong and it's $$$.

Since the M3 is paid off, it would kind of suck to get rid of it now. I'm assuming leasing another cheaper car is not an option? I know parking situation in Manhattan is probably not easy.

Keep your current car especially since it's owned outright. Anyone can learn to drive stick. It would be a higher learning curve in NYC. Take a drive to the country. Go to a local school parking lot. She'll pick it up.

Thanks folks for all the advice. Seems like leasing a new car doesn't make much sense and I have nothing to lose to let her try to learn on my car. If it doesn't go well, I can trade it in on a M3 DCT.

Can't really own a second car in the city. I am paying $450 per month to park the M3, so any other car would be a car payment plus an additional $450. Furthermore, I don't really use my car to commute.

If i lived in NY i would drive a smaller car something like a 1 series. I hate parking with big cars in cramped cities.

The M3 is paid outright so lease a Honda civic for $199 a month or something with a low lease payment. If your girlfriend is moving in, Iím guessing she will contribute to the bills so the money you would be paying for those bills can go towards parking so claim the Honda Civic and its parking as a business expense. Teach your girlfriend how to drive a manual on the Honda Civic first. When she has the hang of it, then let her drive the M3. The clutches and horsepower are like night and day. She will need to be babied into the M3 clutch especially in Manhattan traffic. You donít want the M3 to get away from her while she is learning how to drive. Think of all the times you may have had to take evasive maneuvers and shift without thinking to avoid a crazy cabdriver or a lost tourist. Just my opinion Good Luck
