M3 E93 vs F10 M5

I have been considering changing from an E93 to an F10 M5 to accommodate a growing family.

Having not driven an F10 before, my friend offered to lend me his for the day so I could get a good feel for the car before making a decision.

I genuinely thought this decision would be a no brainer and had already found a year old car which I was serious about buying.

To put this post in context, I don't use my E93 a great deal. 3 mile commute to the station and then out on the weekends with a couple of the kids. If we go anywhere as a family, we take the SUV. The roads where I live are country lanes.

The F10 was awesome. I loved the luxury over the E93, the HUD was great and touches such as soft close doors.

What about the power ? This was the interesting part. The M5 was very fast, but found it uninvolving compared to the E93. Almost case of it wasn't about outright speed but how it achieved it. The speed in the F10 was symbolised by the speedo, whereas the e93 was more involving especially the sound.

The handling was also very different for the roads I drive on. The F10 wasn't as much fun around twisty country lane. You could certain feel the size difference Again - not as involving to drive.

What is perfection?

The engine note of the M3
The handing of the M3
The ride quality of the M5
The torque of the M5
The gadgets and luxury of the M5

Perhaps this is what the M4 will be ??

The F10 is no doubt a superb car and, if I was doing serious miles, it would be a no brainer. But for lower miles around twisty lane with the roof down on a sunny day, I just couldn't give up the E93.

Perhaps hold off and see what the new F8X M3 Sedan will have to offer you if you need 4-Doors and a backseat for the family. The new M3 should hit on all the points above except for maybe "Engine Note of the M3". Nothing will sound like the S65 ever again, but the handling, ride quality, torque and gadgets/luxury will be.

I have a F10 550Xi M Sport and even though it is not a M5, it's no slouch and getting in to this car after my M3 Coupe makes it feel like I'm driving a boat.

Good point Ghetto. Never really liked the shape of the E90. I do love the hard top vert though. Nothing else compared when the roof is down with 8000rpm ringing in your ears.

If you really need the space, get the M5. If not the M6 GC is quite the looker.

Had a M5 flew past me yesterday. Did not hear a damn thing. Its no wonder they have to play fake engine sounds through the stereo.

maybe aftermarket exhaust would fix this - though you still wouldn't get the awesome induction roar like the S65

Get a slightly used CLS63 AMG. I think you'd prefer that over the F10 M5. I surely do.

even with a exhaust they are quiet lol. The turbos rob sound.

engine noise is very important to me. my biggest problem with the new M cars is how quiet they are, again even with a over priced system.

the S65 and S85 are the last singing motors we are going to see from BMW for a while if you ask me.

like i just said, even with exhaust they are quiet. turbos are one of the problems. youtube F10 m5s with exhaust, i was very disappointed the V8 tone and volume with the F10 v8. the S65 v8 actually sounds a lot better.

Well, the N54/N55 motors make quite a lot of noise with an exhaust and sounds good so I wouldn't say its the turbos that make it quiet. BMW purposely wanted to make a quiet car - probably because customers wanted a quiet car.

like i said, one of the problems. not saying its a huge or main problem.

I would like to know the real reason why they are so quiet. I would be kind of shocked people buying a M model cars want there engine quiet to the point you need to run sound through speakers. i think there is more to it. maybe increase of government regulations. Or they had a hard time making the engine loud enough.

listen go to youtube, watch videos. I remember my buddy put eisenmann mufflers on a E60 m5. and that V10 screamed. the eisenmann on the new M5 is still quiet.

its common knowledge that turbos CAN make a car quieter. BTW.

Sounds like you want an Aston Martin Vanquish

My neighbor has an F10 M5 with an aftermarket exhaust..... It is nowhere near quiet. His car sounds really good with it. Maybe the youtube videos are cheating you.

I'm all for technology.

But I also think more could be done about the sound and not just performance.

When it comes to sports car, if it goes fast, it has to sound fast.

Maserati Ghibli used a V6 twin turbo. For some reason they still managed to retain a somewhat similar Flat Plane crank note.

While not 100% identical to a flat plane V8, it does make you turn your head to check it out a 2nd or 3rd time.

I had an encounter with a stock F10 M5 not long ago and I really was surprise by the sound, a beautifull sound and louder then I expected! I'm sure an aftermarket exhaust can make this car more then loud enough!

Don't take F10 sound lightly. I have heard one with aftermarket exhaust and I was surprised it sounded decent( I own M3 and old car was indeed e60)
