My new Cayman S (vs my E92 M3)

Recently, I sold my M3. I absolutely loved this car but it was time to let it go. I had decided I wanted my next car to be 2012 or newer with a budget of ~85k. I initially looked at GT-Rs but had an extremely difficult time finding a clean one without mods. All the ones I looked at were obviously used. I decided against that and then looked at the cayman s and the rs5. I did post a poll here asking for input from you guys and the overwhelming majority picked the Porsche. Although I really liked the Audi, the dealerships kept giving me the run around and I wasn’t looking to play games. They were almost impossible to deal with and I had to keep calling them multiple times to even see if they were getting any in..they frankly didn’t care if they sold me a car or not. Whatever, I can’t say I’m too upset

I picked up a white/black cayman s this past Saturday. Car had about 9 miles on it when I picked it up. I now have about three hundred miles on the car so I have a rough idea of what the car is like compared to the M3 but I will post my thoughts after I put a couple thousand miles on it.

First off, this car is beautiful. If any one on here hasn’t seen this car in person, I suggest you do. It really looks exotic compared to the older ones (imo) and overall it is just an improvement over the last generation. I really like the air intakes on the side of the car, the white/black exterior really set the car off. The car doesn’t have full LEDs like almost all other cars Porsche makes but it has LED fog lights which do look pretty good. I think it looks as good as my M3 did but of course looks are a personal opinion, so I’ll let the pictures do the talking!

After I got over how good the exterior looked, I realized how beautifully finished the cabin was. I’ve never been quite fond of Porsche interiors but with these newer generation cars, they look extremely well. The fit and finish is really on another level and make you feel like you’re in a 100k car compared to the M3. The M3 interior is nice (mine was a 2008) but I still feel like the Porsche wins in that category. I do believe that it is difficult to differentiate between the 991 and 981 interiors. They look so similar I don’t believe I would be able to tell a difference..except for the back seat

Now I’ll really discuss what people are probably the most interested in—the way it drives. The V8 in the E9X M3 is a jem. Many people believe it doesn’t have enough torque, etc but I loved the S65. It sounded phenomenal and it was everything I would need in a car of its caliber. I was hesitant to move towards a 6 cylinder coming from the engine in the M3—if any of you are worried about this, don’t be. The engine is more than enough for the cayman and sure people will say ‘it only has 325hp’ but most don’t realize how much lighter it actually is when comparing it to other vehicles. I believe, in terms of acceleration, it is on par with my old M3. For obvious reasons, I haven’t pushed the car as hard as I’ve wanted to but I think it would hang with the M3 in a straight line. Anybody who buys an M3 isn’t interested in the brute acceleration, or they would have gotten a C63 but I believe more are interested in the handling, and how the car feels overall.

When I first drove the Porsche, I immediately realized how much lighter the car was. Coming from heavier cars, I never really appreciated what a car that weighs so much less actually feels like in a corner. The Porsche just stays planted and feels much more nimble than the M. The best way I can describe the difference is that the M3 destroys the corner while the Porsche does the same but in a more finesse manner. The other main difference in these two cars is the transmission. I had a 6MT in the M and I opted for PDK this time around. If you haven’t driven a PDK transmission, I suggest you do. It is unfortunate that the manual is dying out, but what it is being replace with isn’t that bad. Although I preferred the PDK I know there will be times where I wished I had a manual…

This is just a short review as I didn’t have the time to really go into depth. I will definitely post my opinion after I put more miles on the car..

Here are some pics! They're from an iPhone so don't expect anything fancy..

(The gf drives the VW)

tl;dr
-got a Porsche
-love it
-its beautiful inside/out
-drives completely differently
-miss the M, love the new porsche

That is an awesome car. Love the wheels. I would like to try one of these when the nest is empty.

I have to agree, this newer generation Cayman looks sweet. With the right drop it would look really good. I mean a conservative at 1 inch all around.

I would have stuck to the 6 speed traditional manual. Not a fan of any automatic cars but still an awesome vehicle.

Nice pics!

Also how is the actual ride? I had an 07 Z4MC and for the first year it was ok but after that the little roadster was horrible on my back and legs, especially on long drives. I am wondering if the Porsche is the same way.

Had a previous gen Cayman S and was the best handling car Ive ever owned or driven. The new ones are much better looking and handling has gotten even better. M3 can hang or better them top end (more hp obviously) but the finesse and handling are a good step or two above the M3, or anything BMW for that matter.

Congrats! Car looks incredible, and so does your house.

Have you driven the new one? Can you compare the HPS to the current EPS?

Congrats! If I didn't need the practicality of the M3 I'd be in a new Porsche too. I loved driving the new 911CS, I need to test drive the new Cayman...I just love teasing myself. If the next gen M3/M4 doesn't "wow" me, I'll probably make the move. Thanks for the review and pics, enjoy that gorgeous little go-cart!

Gorgeous car.

I agree, it's probably one of the best all around 2 seaters out there. Curious if Porsche will make the spyder variation using the 981?

Now strap a TPC turbo kit on there and race some ESS/AA M3 folks, would really like to see those matchups!

Well done. I'm tempted to try one as well. Would be great for the track. Keep us updated as the miles and mods unfold.

New construction? Nice. I grew up about an hour north of Tulsa.

Call me crazy, but I had a chance a 991 C4S and a base Boxster. Both were incredible cars, but the Boxster left a bigger impression on me. The handling was so light and crisp. Besides, the 991 was $119k, which is not even something I can even close to afford.

I still find the Cayman S too expensive for my taste, but it's really an incredible machine. And the OP is right, the Boxster/Cayman is definitely a looker!

White on black with the Carrera Classics is exactly the way I'd configure a Cayman S.
