New lens help (Wide Angle)

I currently have the Nikon D40 with the standard 55mm lens. I really want a wide angle lens. Which one should I go with?

Im assuming you want something pretty wide.

I have heard nothing but great reviews for the Sigma 10-20mm for both the canon and nikon cameras. Word of caution though because the lens is extremely wide.

I like my 17-85mm very wide.

This is so old, but i'm posting anyway.

On a Nikon mount either get the Nikon 12-24 or the Tokina 12-24. Third choice would be the Sigma 10-20mm.

Excellent lens for Sigma 10-20mm. Excellent build and VERY sharp lens! Great price for a great lens!
I'm not sure if your camera has cropping. But I'm going to guess it has a 1.6 crop like the Canon Rebel XT/XTI, 30D. So a Sigma 10-20mm lens will equal to 16-32 lens on a full frame non-cropping camera (Canon 40D).

The lens you have now is pretty much 88mm IF your D40 has the cropping.

Tokina 12-24 isn't as good as the Sigma.
If you have a canon camera, I would highly go for the Canon USM 10-22mm.

Another word, try getting the lens you want on ebay. Good prices and you save hell lot more money compaired to buying at a retail store.

12-24mm Nikkor FTW. I'm using it now, it's simply outstanding. There are issues with the Sigma around 10-14mm. It has geometry issues.

And that's why you want to stay away froma "wide angle" of 17-18mm. All of the sudden, it's not so wide.
