2013 BMW M3 - should I get the BMW Performance exhaust?

I have a M3 and now I am wondering if it would be worth having the BMW performance exhaust installed. Can anyone give their thoughts on how they like it and compare it to the stock exhaust. Appreciate some feedback.

its simply not worth the price, when after market or even modding OEM exhaust cost so much less, and give better/same sound. without impacting warrnety non the less.

Its still a really nice system though.

Just to offer a subjective opinion, but was single best mod I've done (even if gives no power increase)....unique sound was worth it to me and to my knowledge, not replicable by any exhaust/mod i've heard (I've yet to hear the Eisenmann Inconel, but that's a $7+k price), especially if you want to keep your cats. Too bad it should have come with the car to begin with, as it is pricey vs other cat-backs (but probably not that pricey considering cost of Inconel).

The stock system is horrible (IMHO) so yes it's worth it compared to stock.

However, it's not worth it compared to other systems out there (such as ones with HFCs) that actually give you a significant power improvement to go along with a significant weight reduction and sound improvement.

If you are on a budget, get the ESS system (sounds fantastic with no rasp) plus their tune. You will gain like 40 more HP and it won't cost much more than the BMW NONPerformance Exhaust.

while waiting for my car to show up in late july i already have been shopping for exhaust solutions.

i've gone from Dinan to Eisenmann Race.

the clip posted here on a sticky with 9 different exhausts clips got me considering Eisenmann Race. funny , since i really want a non obnoxious exhaust and here i am thinking about a race type...

BUT, then i heard this clip of the M performance...(i'm sorry ,can't load video, hit the link!)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SBUD9PjTfjg

...ans now i'm thinking M performance. it just sounds perfect. i'm not a fan of the price...but an Eisenmann exhaust, plus connecting pipes is getting close to that price.

whatever...now i am more confused.

admittedly, i like the fact that it's OEM and wouldn't cause any warranty head aches.

Nope dont get no M exhaust, Hell NO, you can buy a really nice used Arka Evo for around $4200, or better yet a Brand New EES full exhaust for $3600

IMHO, the stock exhaust sounds nice but is way too neutered. The MPE is noticeably louder in the sport category, not the race...and doesn't drone. The MPE has actually saved me money in the long run by ending my exhaust search. I've tried a few. Nothing else sounds like it. Totally worth it to me but sound is so subjective. Guys crack me up saying this or that it the "best" exhaust. No such thing.

picking this one and couldn't be happier. I do wish it were a little louder at times but I have a plan to help with that.

No regrets here.

it depends on what you are looking for
i had the MPE before and now switched to akra evo
i did it for the weight saving and small performance boost, but MPE definitely sounds more exotic, akra evo is just louder
if this is your daily driver, you might want to get an exhaust that doesn't drone, and most of the aftermarket ones do
it's when you drive manual or in S mode you can get out of that drone range
but if you drive in D mode, you will get that annoying drone at around 2k rpm
except for MPE that has really minimal drone

same reaction that most exhausts on a V8 m3 will get..... The bottom line is it is not hard to make this car sound good.

It's a great exhaust but for the price I prefer the Akra.

I disagree. Firstly, you can buy the M Performance for far less than MRSP. Secondly, if you look at similarly constructed products, the MPE is actually very reasonably priced. Eisenmann's Inconel system is $7000 by comparison.

I don't know too many people who installed the MPE and were not happy with the result. On the contrary, there are plenty of people who installed something else and didn't like the result, especially to live with on a daily basis, not just when revving your motor at car meets.

According to some sources, there is a slight hp gain, just nothing worth really advertising.

It is an OEM option that has paperwork ensuring compliance with federal regulations so you can not be hassled by police or inspection stations, if that is a concern.

In my experience, when there is a proper high-end factory option for mods, this usually yields the best result for a street driven vehicle. Building a track beast or a show queen is a different matter.

If you have money to blow then sure its worth it. If you are trying to be more economical while still getting a great sound there are plenty of aftermarket options. As mentioned too, the oem mod will yield great results for far less $ than any other exhaust while still retaining factory driveability (zero drone and you keep the oem rear exhaust).

First and foremost, you need to decide if you like the sound of the MPE, which it seems you have decided.

Second, as some people have mentioned, the MPE is the ONLY exhaust I have seen that has ZERO drone. All other aftermarket exhaust reviews I have read, all state there is drone at one point or another, regardless of how noticeable it is.

With regards to the cost, that depends on your dealership. I was able to negotiate $3750 for my MPE, installed. You can't get an Akra EVO for that price, and IMO, that's the only other comparable exhaust to the MPE.

Lastly, if you're wanting performance gains, like the EVO, spend another $400, and get the ACM test pipes. Combine that with Mike's Stage II tune, and you will be on cloud 9. Since I've put the TPs on, the car club I ride with constantly raves about how bad ass my exhaust sounds. Here is a link with how my car sounded with a defective baffle:

http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=847659

You can hear some rasp occasionally between 3500 and 4000 RPMs (In the Flyby clip, listen at 15 seconds into the clip). This is now gone since I replaced the MPE due to the defective baffle (The baffle issue is very rare, but is something that has been documented).

Good luck with your decision. It's a lot of fun figuring out what to choose! Keep us posted!

Could you post a new clip of your setup with the MPE with the fixed baffle?

I am very curious about the MPE + ACM test pipe setup...

Sure. I will do that sometime this weekend. The exhaust was just replaced last week, so it hasn't broken in yet. As it breaks in, the note gets even deeper and throatier.
