will certainly take officer friendly to court for this. still, $490? is this standard these days? wow.

Go to court. They'll usually reduce the fine.

I'm sure the judge will dismiss this.
60-70 mile is the average speed most ppl drive on the freeway.
Just say you were going with the speed of traffic.

What part of the 405? They usually don't care as long as you keep it under 75mph.

If you break down the cost, there's a shit ton of fees in there. CA is steadily going broke so they kept raising the fees since at least 2011. Straight up from the DMV site:

http://www.dmv.org/ca-california/tra...-penalties.php

"Traffic fines in California are difficult to pinpoint due to additional penalty assessment fees and surcharges that vary by county. Consequently, a ticket with a $35 base fine may actually cost you $146." Oh yeah, as if they didn't fuck you over enough: "The state charges a 20% surcharge on all traffic tickets. This means, for example, a $40 fine will incur a surcharge of $8."

This article explains a lot of it.

http://www.utsandiego.com/news/2012/...becomes-a-235/

Basically, they can sneaking these f-ing fee's in because most people don't notice it.

welcome to Kalifornia...

this is what happens when public service employee unions & extreme leftist democrats take over a state (now with a super majority, YEY!).

A 105mph ticket on the I-10 in Texas by comparison was $182.00

I got a ticket for not fully stopping at a red light on a right turn. Fine was $500. So your speeding ticket sounds about right.

I went to court and they gave everyone a deal if you plead guilty, you get a 50% fine reduction. Obviously if you don't go to court, they won't give you this deal.

I've also gone before a judge for a speeding ticket and said that the fine is too high and ask for a fine reduction and traffic school since I've been a good driver for such a long time. The judge has the power to do anything. He hacked my ticket by over 70% and let me take traffic school.

$490 is nothing. I got $1200 for 120mph in a construction zone on I-5 North near Weed.

I essentially went into lawyer mode when he pulled me over, which means:

1. I did not admit to exceeding 65 mph, despite his numerous requests to do so; and

2. I was able to get him to admit that he was only "pretty sure" that he lazed the correct car.

I will club him to death with no. 2.

Also, I will discuss the potential inaccuracies / pitfalls inherent to his chosen position (out of his car, on top of an on ramp, looking down onto traffic), as well as the distance in terms of which he targeted me at (500 ft. +).

Like I said, he better come prepared.

P.S. I had resigned myself to paying the fine, but at $490 before driving school . . .

That is ridiculous. My last speeding ticket was in Mira Mesa in 1994 and it was $197. That should be the going rate. Plus add on $39 for Traffic school and you are over $200.

For $490 that was going over 140 mph in 1994. Ask me how I know?

This sounds right. My last speeding ticket in California was $197.00. I was clocked at over 140mph in 1994 and I admitted that and the CHP Sergeant ended up writing me for a 75mph in a 65mph zone because I didn't lie when he asked me how fast I thought I was going. I told him 150mph maybe and you should have seen the look on his face. PRICELESS. Ticket was still over $200 when all said and done and he told me I could have went to jail that night and my license could have been suspended for 12 months.

I got off lucky that year.

OP, although I don't live in LA, generally, there's some fee guide on the back of the ticket that shows the amounts for every increment over the limit...so start from there. As another member pointed out, that's just a "base fee". The state and county can do whatever the hell they want to put a surcharge on it for any reason (real excessive speed, construction, school, etc.)

Were you booked for 20 over, but less than 25 over?

It's certainly worth bringing up in court about the excessive nature, but be ready to have it sustained. I suppose rules are rules. So unless you're fighting the fact you actually were speeding, I'm not sure whether the judge will be cut the fee amount if you admit guilt.

Thanks... California!!! Seems to me that there is a more effective way to generate funds in this state.

Best of luck with your arguments. A suggestion...

Be prepared for:

1. The officer denies stating he "was only 'pretty sure' that he lazed the correct car."

2. Have studies to support your suggestion that laser radar does not work accurately when (out of his car, on top of an on ramp, looking down onto traffic, distance 500 ft. +). Have the actual book(s), or printed material with extra copies to provide to the officer and Court.
