iPhone users who know about storage

Maybe y'all can save me a trip the Apple store.

I have an iPhone. It currently has

365 songs = 2.58 GB
228 photos = 474 MB
5 apps = 438.4 MB

yet my storage is full and I cannot take anymore photos or record videos.

There's no way its filled up on storage. Im a little confused on why I cant take photos when my bf's phone has over 2,500 in his photo album on his phone.

edit: iCloud back up is turned off.

Well, it sort of does. The formatted capacity of a 16g iPhone is 13.5g. Of course what you're showing is only 3.5g, and that looks like everything. Is it possible that your backups are consuming the other space? You do get 5g of iCloud backup, should you feel like turning that on.

I figured it out. Delete the group messages and text messages frees up the storage 1 GB

While we're talking about iPhones, anybody get iOS7 and then get a message that says somehting like "you are not a registered developer..."? It basically locks your phone up and you'd have to pay the $100 developer fee.

I got the message but I gladly returned back to iOS6

Stuff like that is what would be taking up all the storage. The usage page only shows main stuff, but backups and other items like that will not be shown and can easily be taking up all that space.

Hmmm..The texts only freed up 1 GB. My iCloud is off thus being no back ups for months. It still seems like there should be more storage.

Also depends how large your email database is and if you are downloading attachments. If you have a huge email profile that will take up a chunk as well. Limit the amount of days being downloaded.

Also don't forget pics and videos.

If you connect your iPhone to a computer running iTunes, you'll probably see a lot of data taken up by "other". This is non-app data, like Messages as you've discovered, but also email, Safari cache, and lots of other things... As far as I can tell, neither iTunes nor iOS do anything to tell you what exactly is stored as "other," or how to clean up stuff you no longer need.

Clear your "old man dick pics" folder. That should take care of the 10gb "other".

Is your phone jailbroken? Have you downloaded any ibooks or pdfs?

Maybe try deleting the apps one by one to see if it fixes it. Sometimes apps can keep a data cache hidden away without appearing in the list.
