Obama suing BMW

So I just got news that the Obama administration is suing BMW because they run background checks on African Americans before hiring them.

Just wanted to share that and get your opinions.

Anyone else agree that could be doing better things than telling a company that's not in his country what to do? Maybe he is mad because his bullet proof Cadillac lost in a race against a bimmer. what a joke of a man

Actually I doubt Obama is personally suing BMW, However If bmw is only running background checks on black people, which I doubt, then fuck them.

I heard about that too. I think its the plant in South carolina that they are talking about.

They are being sued because they are running criminal background check in SC plant for prospective employee. Unfortunately, majority of them are African-American. So they discriminate African-American. What a logical thinking. No wonder we are in a big mess.

If they are doing it only on black applicants, very wrong.

If they do it on everyone, including black applicants, perfectly fine.

I'd like more details as well.

So long as they are applying the background check to all potential employees, I don't have an issue with them doing so. My firm performs such checks on all candidates for employment, indeed, we check for more than criminal records.

If the management at the SC plant are selectively, based on race, checking up on folks, that is unfair and that inequity should be addressed. After all, the fact is that black people do not commit the majority of crimes that are unsuccessfully attempted and black people aren't the majority of people who are incarcerated. (http://www.bop.gov/news/quick.jsp) It is true that a greater percentage of the black population, as compared with other races, is in jail, but the arithmetic of the matter can by itself be the cause for that statistic.

Wow that's kind of an ass thing to say. And I put it on E90 cause I have one and it's about bmw I don't know relax. And yes I love my 3 series.

If they run background checks only on African Americans, sure that would be biased, but don't all companies do it for everyone either black white etc...?

From the link above:

"Dollar General was doing their due diligence prior to hiring candidates -- they ran background checks. Apparently, the background checks were weeding out too many African Americans and that has the Obama administration (Equal Employment Opportunity Corp) crying foul. They think it is racist."

So let's say they run backgrounds checks on everyone and happens to weed out many African Americans? Discrimination?

It will be sure fun to see what will be their findings, as if they were racist in selection it would be quite a surprise.

I mean as long as BMW was running background checks on all employees and not just African Americans then nothing can be done; however, if it was just on African Americans then that's a completely different story. Any one else think this might be a ploy to get some of the attention off of what a joke the Obama Administration has been and all the scandals surrounding I? I mean it is kind of bold to attack a major corporation like this, especially one that isn't based in the U.S.

What's wrong with background checks before employment? For almost her entire career, my wife has been drug tested and NCIC criminal background checked for each of her jobs. Doesn't mean she should sue everybody. What a crazy lame society we live in, when you stand to gain more by suing, than you do by showing up to work 80 hours a week. imho pathetic.

Just curious, but did some of you actually read the story at all?

The issue isn't about them performing background checks for new employees. It's about them performing background checks for current employees that were required to undergo a new background check when they hired a new logistics contractor.

55% of the people screened were black
80% of the people let go were black
Some of them had been with the plant for as long as 14 years

With all that said, it's a very very weak case. I doubt anything becomes of this.

They check everybody before employment including the office staff. Its just more govBS because there are no unions in the southern plants. They broke Boeings chops when they were building a jet plane plant down here, same deal on the unions. They tell all that they are for jobs then try to stop new plants from going in, go figure?

If the screening used the same criteria for all people there is no case. The only thing that can be said about a long term employee who goes down is he beat the system for 14 years.

This can be a confusing situation on the surface but it breaks down to these 2 ideas:

1- Black people were arrested because they were black and therefore criminal convictions are racist

2- Using a backround check and not hiring someone based on criminal convictions is racist because of num1

It's a social justice type issue so it can be seen from different viewpoints
