Initial Subjective Impression - ESS VT2 650 vs ESS VT2 625

What up guys.

So after replacing the standard 96mm pulley that comes in the 625 kit to a 92mm pulley and increasing my rev limit to 8,600 RPM, my car felt fantastic. But I didn't gain much peak power in doing so, even though boost increased from 5.0psi to 5.7psi. Peak RWHP increased from 567 (STD) to 573 (STD).

The 92mm pulley gave me the same ratio for boost as the pulley system in the 650 kit, but my boost is still low. Why? Who knows at this point.

Regardless, since I was already needing to run higher octane than what we get here out of the pump in Cali, I was justified in upgrading to the 650 "kit" from ESS...which in addition to the new pulley system, provides for more fuel (larger injectors) and a revised tune. The tune is the key here, as the increased injectors allow for more fuel on the top-end and gives ESS the ability to "fine tune" at the top of the rev range. It also give me more peace of mind given that we are at the limit of what the S65 is capable of in stock form and I don't want to even run lean on fuel.

So what happened? Well, I dyno'd at EAS again and peak power, on average, increased by about 20 as compared with the off-the-shelf 625 kit. So it does what it's marketed to do. The peak power (on my highest dyno runs) achieved on the 625 kit was 567 vs 583 with the 650 kit, however what was apparent was that the 650 kit on the dyno was much more stable and consistent. My dyno's with the 625 kit were subject to more volatility/wider range of discrepancy.

I'm not posting any dyno's in this thread - I will do that later once my new water/meth kit gets installed.

What I wanted to share is my "seat of the pants" impression because there is a significant difference in what I "feel". A la my subjective review.

Even before the car fully adapted to the new 650 tune, I felt a significant increase in "pull" above 7,000 RPM when I first took it for a spin. Not just a little...but a lot. With my prior set up, there was at times, a transition of acceleration at 7K, which I described to others as similar in feeling as what is felt on a sport bike which provides accleration boost at a particular transitory RPM (usually above 8K RPM)

Now, this acceleration transition is consistent and just violent. Perhaps I'm desensitized to how fast the car accelerates below 7K, but below 7K, the car now comparatively feels slow. I know it's not slow because the dyno graphs prove that I'm making just as much power as before (with the 625 kit, upgraded 92mm pulley and 8.6K RPM limit) below 7K. But at 7K, f*ck. I'm telling you the transition makes me loose my stomach every time.

We're entering the dog days of summer here in SoCal so no Airstrip events for a while. But I'm looking forward to the next one coming up in about 3 months to see what I can do with the new top end power.

Be back soon with dyno/technical info.

Cheerz.

I went from a 600 to the 650 and, yes, your correct. Above 7,000 RPM the pull can be very noticeable. Lately however, with the summer heat, the pull isn't as strong consistently. Let me know how your meth kit goes, love to know!

These numbers are insane. The fact that your car is putting these kinda of figures down on only 5.7 pounds of boost still amazes me.

Nobody else comes close to the boost/power ratio that ESS puts down! They know how to tune fo sho!

In for the Dyno's!

I'm not tuning for it, just to keep IAT's down at the track. I would just run 100% water since that's what helps most but methanol provides for a little octane bump as well as it's easy to just run Boost Juice.

If you don't tune for it, it will give a small power bump, but more importantly keep the power there when it gets hot.

I bought the Snow Performance Stg 2 kit. Perfect for a centrifugal charged M3.

Hey when did you get an e90?? Congrats

Just saw your dyno. Nice #'s and oh, it says the shop is in St Charles huh? I used to go there every year when I worked at Arthur Andersen back in the day for training. Got super wasted once and on my way back from the bars found a bike and rode it into the river. Great times

Wassup Don! Well it's no M3. Fugly as sin but it launches like crazy. I even took it offroad the other day and it just goes like snot through dirt

With Stg 2 and a protune, it made 305 AWHP on Cobb's Mustang dyno on 91 oct and 315 AWHP when I added a bottle of Torco. I would guess a stock M3 does maybe 320 on a Mustang on 91 octane.

^^^ Impressive tune! I like the WRX wing on it. The STi one is a bit too much. As ugly as they are, they sure do make up for it in other departments. Look good man, but you should drop that sucker!

Seeing this makes me miss mine. I should have keep it as a DD.

Haha, the E90 M3 has been parked along side the E46 since 08.2009. It's essentially stock, so I never really post much about it.

St. Charles indeed! My good friend owns a small car shop there that many of us car nuts frequently hang out at. Downtown St. Charles is always fun to drink at, haha. If you're ever back in the Windy City, definitely give me a heads up. I can remind you of what a slow E90 M3, half as fast as yours, feels like again...

Great numbers OP. I like your enthusiasm. SC from day 1, and now raised rev limiter plus more boost. Good stuff. Oh and you surely need a set of different cams to see the benefit of raised rev limiter.

IIRC something was wrong with OP's boost sensor. I don't know though if he has replaced it or not yet. But let's be realistic, 5.7psi is not gonna give you anything close to low 500's, let alone 580-ish numbers.

Thx. Yeah the readings are low for sure but at least they are consistent as I've dyno'd over 30 times.

EAS is measuring boost from the manifold on the dyno using the bypass valve. Early on, EAS even hooked up a mechanical boost guage directly to the manifold because we were assuming the dyno either wasn't reading correctly or something. But the mechanical boost guage read the exact same numbers. EAS dyno's dozens of supercharged e9X M3's and they know how to hook up the boost sensor/guage.

Further, the readings are also consistent when changing things around. With the 96mm pulley I was at 5.1psi with the stock exhaust. When I went with the MRF catless mid-pipe, I dropped to 4.9-5.0psi (the delta is consistent with what esquire found from changing from Akra Evo to MRF). When I changed to the 92mm pulley, I went to 5.7psi. That was about the same boost as my first couple pulls with the 650 pulley system (the last dyno pulls I got weird boost spikes from what looked like throttle closure). So if you assume my original boost reading of 5.1 was correct with the 96mm pulley and stock exhaust, all the changes from that point make sense.

I'm open to more ideas if anyone has any.
