Je suis Charlie - Paris January 7th 2015

Just thought I had to share our sorrows from what innocent journalists, police officers and guards underwent yesterday here in Paris.

"Je suis Charlie" is the word

Such a horrible, tragic act of violence. We're all standing together against cowards like this

I'm all for freedom of speech - but Europe does not have it.

Try drawing an anti-Semitic or pro Nazi cartoon in Europe and see what happens. Try it in Germany and you will end up in Jail. Freedom of speech... are you kidding me?

Nobody deserves to be killed for a stupid cartoon in bad taste. Stupid religious people. Muslims kill for cartoons and Christians bomb abortion clinics. Jews kill for Temple Mount. I think it's all stupid.

Those cartoons were in really bad taste. However - killing people is illegal, immoral and plain WRONG!

Have a look at the link about freedom of speech:

If you draw a cartoon making depicting that the holocaust never happened, you'd be thrown in jail in most Western European countries. The reason it's illegal is it's considered hate speech, and that it could lead to violence.
But if choose to mock Mohamed, it's considered freedom of speech

Surely if you think this type of cartoon can lead to violence, shouldn't both be illegal?

Placate those willing to be the most violent. That's how Europe rolls bra.

Neither should be illegal. It's an unpopular opinion which you're cartooning but freedom of expression must be absolute. It's not wise to cartoon the holocaust (or the Prophet Muhammad) due to the ire you'll draw but it should absolutely be allowed, no holds barred. This is true freedom of expression.

People don't have a natural right to go through life having not been offended.

However you are 100% correct that there is a double standard here. People think that they're sticking it to extremist terrorists but in doing so they inadvertently trivialize a tenet of the Islamic faith. It's inconsiderate but still should not be illegal.

But freedom of speech is not absolute in any country on planet earth

Absolute freedoms of speech, means I can say anything I want
Without consequences
In the US, there is a certain phrase that if you said it out loud
You'd probably end up in jail
It refers to killing a certain someone who lives in DC
I can't say it because I'm arab, and muslim, so I'd probably be arrested before I click "post"
So yeah nowhere on this planet can you say what you want.
I just find it hypocritical when I can mock Muslims, and Christians, but I better not mock the Jews.

Most westerners think that Muslims are crazy and that they are backward
I'm not saying some aren't, don't forget the level of education in most Islamic countries is much lower than the west.
But we also hold Mohamed (and Moses and Jesus) on a much higher pedestal than you guys do in the west.
These 3 were messengers of God, and so are given respect and revered.
Don't forget that Muslims are the only ones who believe in all 3

In the west, you have Jesus christ superstar
It's a different perspective

And I am not condoning what these retards did in Paris
And in no way should what they did be associated to Islam

Normally, Charlie Hebdo runs at about 60,000 copies per run. Because of what these Muslims extremists did, they are now going to run THREE MILLION COPIES of the magazine, featuring lots and lots of Mohammed cartoons, in sixteen different languages.

Talk about irony...

Wrong. You cannot threaten someone - in other words say that you are going to cause harm to them. You are free to say you wish he was dead all you want, and publish cartoons depicting his death if you want. That is the difference.

You're correct; practically speaking, true freedom of expression does not exist. But does that mean that it shouldn't? Should it not be legal to mock everybody equally? To utter seditious comments without the fear of repercussion? To stand on the proverbial street corner and yell about how the aliens are coming?
