Talking Houston M Club Invades TWS 8/17

It is with great pleasure and excitement that I announce our first "official" Houston M Club track event at TWS. The format for this event will be the same as our previous events. We'll have 3 run groups consisting of beginner/novice, intermediate, and advance/instructor. This will be a full day event so plan accordingly. Each group will get (4) 30 minute sessions with a 1 hour mid-day break. This promises to be a great event so don't wait until the last minute. Instructors will be limited to 1 student so when our instructor pool is full the beginner/novice group will be closed......."Let's Ride".................Phil

When-----> August 17th

Time------> 10am-5pm
Direction---> CCW

Cost-----> $195

wish it was a different weekend, so we could attend, but we will be at MSRH with TDE. Have fun and be safe.

Bummer - I'll be at MSRH with TDE. Great pricing. It's probably too late, but something to consider for next summer day event is to start earlier. PDS at TWS went to 6 AM to 2 PM days last summer and combined some sessions to help beat the heat. Made a big difference. Of course with the times you have, there is no need for Houston crowd to get a room.

Hello, I'm not a Houstonite, but a friend from this last weekend Driver's Edge event at TWS shared this with me. He also sent me the registration link. Is this open to any M owner?

I'm trying to get as much seat time as possible, and TWS is close to home.

What's up bro?, its Simon. Yes, you should be able to attend as long as they have openings. The Houston M Club guys are awesome group of enthusiast. This is where I begun my HPDE Journey. I wish I could attend, but will for sure on the next one.

BTW Phil, his MCoupe is bad ass! and he is a skilled driver at TWS.

Hey brother, sounds good. I didn't realize the organization existed, or did DEs. Houston is a bit of drive for me, but TWS is pretty close. Look forward to seeing you at other events, just stay away from the Miatas!

I'm up in Austin, and I'm really thinking about trying this if there are any novice spots still open. Just haven't been able to convince myself to commit.

So here are some rookie concerns that maybe y'all can help me with... and if there are still spots open maybe I can convince myself to go for it.

1. The M3. Don't wanna wear out the tires in a day and buy new ones, tear up the clutch, brakes, etc... so is it possible for a new guy to go easy?

2. My skill level. I mostly ride a bicycle to begin with. I drive OK out on the roads, but as far as any real driving/racing experience I have ZERO, and honestly I'm not looking to be the next AJ Foyt.

So: Anyone willing to put my fears to rest and help me sign up for this thing?!

This is the best way to learn your car capabilities. Also there is no way you will wear our your tires on the first day. I've ran my m3 at track events with stock tires until I got dedicated track tires. Your brakes and the rest should be fine. I think you will be fine since you will be places in novice.

El Bimmer replied, but I'll add-on.

1. You won't wear out that stuff in a day. As an example, I made four track days, plus 16,000 of other miles before it was time to replace the tires. This will just give you a good excuse to get a second set of 18" or 19" (whatever you don't have now) wheels and then run cheaper 18" tires for track days.

2. This is the place to learn! Nobody, and I mean nobody, will "push" you to do anything more than you want to do. The "novice" group is about learning...learning your car, and learning driving skills.

Often in new situations, I suggest that people go "look" to see if they want to try a new sport/adventure/etc. But in this case, if you came to TWS to watch, after about ten minutes' time you would say, "Damn, wish I had signed up for this!"

- V

Thanks VMcV3y and El Bimmer.

Edit: actually I'd better look into the insurance implications before I commit to this!! Anyone have info to share on that too? Thank you!

There's some debate as to whether your regular insurance will cover this event. If you have your policy, take a look. Most make an exclusion for these type of events. Regardless, to keep things clean, I used to buy track insurance (ontrackinsurance.com). Its about $350 per event. I am sure there are cheaper policies, but these folks are super easy to deal with. If you go with them, it will be better if Phil or Richard talks with them ahead of time and explain the event rules. If they like what they hear, they'll list the event, making it easier to sign up.

I will make one more comment. Texas World Speedway is probably one of the safest tracks in Texas. There is a lot of run off. If you're in Novice group, leaving DSC ON, listening to your instructor, and you have good brakes and fluid, then there is a very low probability of doing any damage. It is not zero though, so you'll probably want get some insurance.
