S65 with flat plane crank

Just thinking of rebuilding an S65 with a flat plane crank.
Posting here since I like to know if someone has done it already or knows about it, except the P65 engine of the GT2 car.

Haven't heard of one yet, but a crank, cams, and someone to write the software are all you will need to do it!

Please excuse my ignorance. What would be the benefit?

Why would you want to do that?I know that when flat plane cranks were used in American V8's used in Formula 5000 cars the vibration would destroy the chassis but they did sound pretty wild!

Less rotating mass, as it does not require counter weights.

As others have said, less moving mass. But, the engine was not built to handle the increased vibration. I'd think that a flat plane S65 would go boom rather fast. I'm not sure you'd see any real benefit.

True:

But less mass and higher rev are also a win.

The BMW Z4's that run in the ALMS run a normal firing order crank not the flat plane cranks they ran in the M3GTR.Why?Rules?In my opinion I like the sound of the Z4's a lot better than the previous M3GTR with the flat plane crank.

To sound like a Ferrari V8? And maybe get up to 8800 rpm?

Let me get this straight... You are swapping out parts designed by some of the top engineers in the world because some guys sponsored by a company told you it's "better??" But when you ask the same guy about tracking, "oh no, I have a kid now" or "I just detailed my car." or "i just got new tires."

I think they have to run a production motor now, but with a silhouette car running against production based chassis why stop there? I guess it's a step toward merging GA and ALMS

I don't know. An S65 already sounds pretty amazing and will never sound Ferrari V8 largely because of firing order and somewhat the flatplane. But certainly would not go through this trouble on this engine. I actually don't understand why the race car does do (or did do) a flat crank S65 and then they use restrictor plates on the intake??? So the little weight you shave off is it really worth that in a race applications? I guess so but to a road car I don't even think you would be limited by the cross plane crank in terms of making NA hp if you were to build the motor and cams and run it to 9k. I think with built parts naturally aspirated you can gain a ton of power with the cross plane how it is and not much more with a flat plane

This car uses a traditional cross-plane which is why it is interesting to see peoples perceptions are not always based upon reality.

Sounds like a good loud catless regular m3.

Nobody said that the GTE has a flat plane, but I think I will try it.
Anybody interested in a cross-plane stroker Kit I just received?

Send a message via AIM to kiln
specs of the stroke, piston size, and brand/type of rod would be nice. Were you building a 4.4L or 4.6L? Don't you already have a Dinan 4.6L?
