Has any M3 owner here moved to a X5M or X6M?

I think I'm leaning in that direction ~ as much as I love the M3 / M5 sedans they just don't have the space I'm used to with our stable of suv's and minivan's in our garage.

The M3 is a definite improvement in space over our 2-seater sports cars but you should see the crap I keep in my M3 trunk from kid gear, gym bag, bowling bag, the space goes away fast! haha

Wife says I'm a hoarder but I just believe in being "prepared" for any situation!

Anyways any X5M or X6M owners past or present?

I drove the X6M a while back and was mighty impressed with everything except the price tag. I loved the fact the newer ones can seat 5 instead of the stupid 4-seater arrangement!

What would you guys do?

X6m is hideous. I myself am leaning towards X5m since I go on so many trips. Little more comfort and space would be very useful with almost the same power. That being said, I would also like to see opinions on this subject.

Get therapy. And keep the M3.

The above should put you off the X6, M or otherwise, for life.

Depends on your situation, but if I had to choose between the two it would be a X5 with a tune and downpipes ... its everything you want if your coming out of the M3

I don't know anything about either car. But I saw an X5 with an M badge on it the other day, and whipped out my phone to take a poser photo. They really M-badged an X5?

You can't track a x5/6m...I think you need to straighten out your priorities all that room is over rated

I own a few cars that are "trackable" and never take any of them to the track due to time constraints. Maybe when the kids get older I'll worry about this aspect.

Yup only take my double roller bag most days, won't even try to fit the triple bag or more balls during tournaments...haha

Agreed that the X5M and X6M is not too easy on the eyes in stock form but I've seen a few modded ones at SEMA and they look sinister! Check out this Cayenne Turbo at my local dealer with an $80k Masonry kit ~ over $200k MSRP on this sucka! I love the looks but not the price tag

I made the switch from a E90 M3 to a E70 X5M. I am very happy with the change.

PM me if you have any questions.

I actually own both, fully loaded X5M and a no options DCT M3. The DCT gives you of course a different transmission feel vs. the 6 speed automatic with paddles in the X5M. I like the ride of the X5M even on the run flats and it has unbelievable power and turning stability but you need to get used to the high seating position. You tend to always drive faster with the X5M because it has much more twin turbo torque than the M3 but be ready for some horrible MPG, even compared to the M3. It is plenty big, we go skiing with the kids and there is enough room for ski gear, just the right size. Lastly, there are many more M3s or Cayenne Turbo on the road vs. the X5M. I suggest to get the full leather option since it has such a large cabin space. I do not like the X6 since it has a less aggressive stance and less cargo room which defeats the purpose IMHO.

FWIW, I just returned from a 2 day driving course at the BMW Performance Center. One of our "duties" was to drive and compare 5 different cars on a handling course. The five cars were an E90 M3 (one of which I own), a new M5, an X6M, a 750Li, and a 335i.

At the conclusion, all drivers unanimously voted the "old M3" the easiest, most fun to drive.

My personal ratings & rationale:

Favorite: M3 - most well balanced, easiest to modulate and drive fast, yadda, yadda.

Biggest surprise: 750Li - I couldn't believe how well such a big boat could handle.

Biggest disappointment: X6M - didn't really do anything very well - too heavy & hi centered to handle very well, power delivery was the most non-linear I've felt since an early Porsche turbo. Interestingly, the M5 with the same engine was much more linear in delivery, although still much more difficult to drive smoothly than the M3.

Without being able to get a third row of seats the x5m is no more useful then the m3.

I was just thinking of this Top Gear episode when I saw the thread. Worst of both worlds... Terrible off-road and terrible on-road. LOL. X6/X6M for the fail.

X5M better, but still completely sucks in snow or off-road. The stock tires are summer/street tires. Even the Range Rover Sport SC has shit tires for the winter or off road. All "Sport" SUV like SRT8 Jeep, ML63, RRS SC, and X5M are totally dialed for summer street from the factory. If you want to use the vehicle for anything remotely rugged or in bad conditions, you need new tires.

That being said, I would go with a Porsche Cayenne GTS or Turbo if I was going down that road.

I agree with this, i find the JEEP SRT8, X5M, Cayenne, ML63, pretty much pointless. Unless you plan to use them for light towing there is really no point on driving a huge gas guzzling titanic in the street. They are useless off road, terrible for track days, a pain in the ass to park, bad on fuel, horrible to maintain (bigger tires, brakes, engine, to make up for weight), and space is no better than your average wagon. I would love an m3 wagon c63 estate, or rs4 avant. Sadly we cant get any of these in the states, to me its the perfect combination of sport and useful.

I drool over the looks and utility of the RS4 Avant but unfortunately i can only dream of ever seeing something like this offered in the states.

A lot of strong opinions here and all good info for me to read and mull over!

thanks for all the comments, I not in a rush to make a decision. Just wanted to hear m3 owners thoughts for now. Sadly there is no new cars I really want (at least now the ones I can realistically afford) My current stable covers all of life's necessities however our SUV's are boring and my wife's hybrid is too practical.

I keep looking at the GTR but deep down I know the car is too small for my needs. Exotics are fun but only seats are is definitely a big no no at this point in my life.

I drove the new Cayenne GTS, awesome ride and priced about same as the X5M and I think they are direct competitors right?
