Should keep some microfibre cloth in the car for just such an occasion.

I remember seeing a video somewhere that showed the different damage caused by washing the car at various types of locations. One was a hand wash place and in the end, they used squeegees and towels to dry and it was the 2nd least damaging. Didnt cause as much as one would think, but it wasnt pretty.

sponge side is actually worse as it has that mesh that is pretty abrasive. used once on my pathfinder back in the day and made nice scratch trying to get bird poop off.
