What is this weld?

Was looking at the engine today on a 2013 e92 I took delivery direct from factory less than 3 months ago and noticed on the drivers side in front of the engine behind air intake when you look down there is what looks like a weld. I think there is one on the passenger side as well but it is covered by something. Do you guys with an M3 have the same curvy weld and know what it is holding together?

Wide shot

Zoom of wide shot (what looks like blurriness on either side of round peg in middle is just less weld material)

My M3 isn't in yet, but looking at my E92 328, I don't see anything that looks anything like that. When you say "on the right side", do you mean passenger or driver side? BTW, those pictures are HUGE and a bit out of focus. It's hard to tell where to look.

Drivers side, photos are not so good as I took em at night, weld is in middle of both photos. Sorry they are so big, did not realize until I posted them.

Looked all over my driver's side under the hood. Can't find anything that looks like that. It looks like it is just under the air intake. I've owned this thing since brand new. Whatever you have a picture of, the welding looks sloppy and not at all factory. Best I can tell, that weld is pretty deep in the car and my best guess is it's been in a wreck. Beyond that, I've got nothing.

It is on drivers side in front of engine at the bottom behind air intake. I took delivery direct from factory less than 3 months ago. What year is yours?

2011. I just crawled all over mine and can't find a weld that looks remotely like that.

I can't believe some of these posts.

OP: It's a beautiful factory aluminium weld, absolutely normal. You are looking at the engine subframe.

It's the hidden "Jesus weld." If it breaks, we all die. We have to believe in the afterlife in case something happens.

JK guys.

Good to know, any idea what it is holding together, looks like it is located where a motor mount might be?

Hey, I've got a 328. I was doing the best I could If you say that is factory, then so be it. I am curious as to where this weld is. I can't find anything remotely like this on my car. I am curious as to why my 328 has very tight looking welds and an M3 has such sloppy welds, especially considering I will have a new M3 in about 3 weeks.

The factory weld is one of a few on the aluminum subframe. The subframe is important; it supports the engine, connects to the frame, needs to be strong-but not heavy, and the front suspension connects to it.

Despite what Atombyte says, the welds are actually pretty clean. The roll-out is contiguous and fluid save for one "pause point" in the middle. You can tell they were performed by a robot.
