328i vs. Cayman (S)

Well, long story short, I was at the Porsche dealership today with my mother as she is interested in getting a Cayenne or Panamera.

Man, looking at that thing in person makes it that much better. Does anyone have experience with it? I'm assuming most of you would say go for the switch, but maybe not.

Opinions greatly appreciated. There's a lease special going on with the Cayman which makes it that much more worth it as well.

Have you driven it? If so, you'll answer your own question. You'll do it.

The 328i is a good car.

The Porsche Cayman S is a brilliant car, and it is on an entirely different level than the 328i. Most critics think the Cayman's suspension/handling/damping is better than the 911's.

It's that good. No it's not as powerful as some of the 911s but it has plenty of power for its weight.

The E90/92 328i is a great mid-size car. With the right suspension, actually kind of sporty.

It's is far, far under the Cayman in terms of performance capability.

The 328i holds more people.

So it depends on what you need, or want.

Cayman S vs. a 328i? No brainer.

Initial thought as well. Wanted to see what everyone said.

I'll be going to test drive it within the next week I think. I'll see what I end up doing. If they continue with this special, it would be hard NOT to take the offer.

I've been a huge fan of the car for such a long time now, I can't get over the beauty that can be packed into such a small car.

They're nice, but slow. For a 30-50k price range I'd look at used e92 m3's, but for 50+k I'd buy a used GTR.

I personally think the m3 is far superior to caymans, and even the non turbo 911s. 90k for a sports car with 350hp? No thanks.

What are the terms for this "special" offer?

Slow? No. M3 superior to the Cayman? No, not on the track at least.

0-60 Time: 4.7 Seconds (and that was with the 6-speed manual)

Top Speed: 175 mph

Nurburgring Lap Times:

Porsche Cayman S: 7:55.00

BMW M3: 8:05.00

The E9X M3 is 10 seconds slower than the Cayman S around the most rigorous track in the world.

Amazing what saving 600 pounds can do for 70 fewer hp.

No kidding. I was expecting the Cayman S to be at least a few seconds quicker but not ten.

i think the cayman S is a waste of money.

if i was going to buy a Porsche it would be a 911. i love 911s, but dam are they expensive.

Yeah and 10 seconds on that track is a lifetime, especially as you break into the 8s and 7s (i.e. an advantage of 7:40 vs 7:50 is far more impressive than an advantage of 9:40 vs 9:50)

To each their own but from everything I've read, the new Cayman S is one of the best P-cars out there today, especially considering the relatively low cost.

I'll chime in since I've owned both a Cayman S and 911 turbo before my current 328i. The Cayman S is hands down the better handling car and was a blast to drive, but I started wanting more power (I had a 987.2 PDK). So, I stepped up to a 997.2 911 turbo PDK, which was crazy fast, actually far to much power to be useable on the street, but man could it haul! I ran a 11.0 @ 126mph bone stock the only time I took it to the drag strip. It didn't handle like the mid engine Cayman though.
Now I have the 328, and am pleasantly surprised with its handling/power/fun on the street. I drove a X3 for a few months between the turbo and 328, so that probably is why I didn't have a huge let down moving into the 328.
Now, I'm sure I would find the new Cayman S fast again. Funny how the car circle can go round and round!

If you can afford it and want it, go for it. Especially if you plan to do a lot of track days.

Porsche is never going to be the most speed for a particular price level (but then again, neither is BMW)

Without a doubt go cayman s. I would choose it over an e92 M3 any day of the week and am currently thinking of going to one after my 991s.

Not even close. I moved from a 335 to a Cayman S and that was a giant step forward, going from a 328 would be even more dramatic.

Do it!

Sub 3K lbs!!! Better handling than 911 and so many other cars. However, before you buy it check out C7.

GL!

Exactly. The M3 is superior if you want to haul 4 people around. Cayman S all the way. Id pick it over most 911's. Especially the new 981 Cayman S.
1st car to break into the 12's under 350 hp. Thats pretty damn quick to me. Slow isnt a word I'd use to describe it. Everyone is so hung up on having 500-600hp when its just a number.

Get the GTR if thats your thing but its still ugly as shit.

BMW M3 is amazing but it dosnt feel like a Porsche.

Just curious since you own a 911c2s. Do you think that a 981 cayman looks better then the current 991? I recently went Rizza Porsche here in Chicago and got a chance to check out both side by side and the Cayman won the looks department by far. It had a better stance and the side profile is gorgeous.

The C7 is no joke. 460 well balanced usable hp and the interior is night and day between the old c6's. Vette has stepped it up big. Its crazy to think that in a year you will be able to probably scoop one up for mid to high 30k. Bargain of a lifetime IMO.
