BMW Performance Exhaust and Turner Test pipes

I haven't heard any other videos of the BMW Performance Exhaust with any sort of cat delete. I have some video of a car with the BMW Performance exhaust with Turner test pipes, but the secondary cats and resonators intact.

This is one great setup... if you don't mind a raspy exhaust note. Lots of people like it... I don't. It is aggressive and loud when you stomp on it, but shuts up completely (and I mean completely like stock) when you aren't on it. It can completely shut up and sound like stock when you are cruising at light throttle, but it wails and sounds really bad-ass when you are accelerating hard.

Fitment on both pieces was perfect, bolted right up with no fuss. The Turner test pipes with the stock secondary cats and stock resonators are very quiet, quieter than my Fabspeed setup, my Akrapovic midpipes and my Challenge midpipes.

I've had a lot of other exhausts:
Magnaflow
Corsa
Riss Racing
Autobahn Exotics
Vanguard
Vanguard + Fabspeed X pipe (stock cats)
Akrapovic slip on + Fabspeed X pipe
Akrapovic slip on
Akrapovic Evolution
Challenge Sport X pipe + Akrapovic Slip on
Challenge Sport X pipe + Arqray titanium

This setup is by a decent margin, the quietest of all the aftermarket setups when you are just cruising, but one of the loudest on the gas. It's kind of strange, but I love it. When it's cold, it's raspy as heck, and it's still a little raspy when it's warm. I suspect some of that will go away as it breaks in, usually exhausts tend to get a little bit smoother sounding.

I like that this exhaust has a bit more personality than the sterile sounding Akrapovic and the smooth vanguard. It is a bit muscle car beefy in the low rpms, with a purposeful GETOUTTAMYWAY and it really screams at the high rpms. Our cars tend to overpower the exhaust note with intake noise above 6000 rpm, but with the windows down, the exhaust still makes it's banshee wail. It is definitely different sounding than other BMW exhausts as well, it doesn't really sound like anything else I've heard. But, ugh the rasp! (I blame the test pipes for this, as the exhaust itself doesn't do that)

For the price (just under $4k) I think this setup is a real winner, if you can deal with the rasp. It's the quietest non-stock exhaust that I've heard at low throttle openings.

Of course, this is not actually on MY car as that would be ILLEGAL on the street.

What I don't like:
- the cans do hang down a bit too much. I should have powder coated them black, maybe I still will before it gets too dirty.
- it's pretty raspy when cold, although not very loud
- it's a little too raspy.
- the tips could stand to be 10% larger or so, but they are very attractive otherwise.

It is one of the most expensive exhausts on the market, but BMW's engineering really shows through. It's almost like having 2 exhausts in one, you drive slow and it's just slightly more aggressive than stock, but get one it aggressively and you've poked the beast! No drone, absolutely none, I could drive my grandma around in it and she wouldn't notice. I just wish it didn't sound like a PO'd lawnmower.

Enjoy! (the video doesn't have many visuals, it's all about the audio.) If you're bored, compare it to my other exhaust videos and you can see how different it sounds.

Nice, but too raspy for my tastes. Even the last stock exhaust modification I heard recently sounded less raspy. Wonder if BMW didn't put any steel wool packing material inside the muffler . I don't see raspiness going away. Usually exhausts become raspier as packing material burns or blows away, not the other way around.

The raspiness is the test pipes. Yeah, it's a little raspy from the outside. I'll give it some time. But, the other videos with the Turner test pipes are pretty raspy too.

I'm actually curious to see if the test pipes make other exhausts raspy too, or if there is something unique about the BMW performance exhaust. Because, dang it, if one can't run some sort of primary cat delete with it, it's going up for sale

Sounds great....Is the smell noticeable inside the cabin with the test pipes?

No smell, since the secondary cats are still in place. (kind of the beauty of the Turner Test pipes)

A little raspy from the vid without the primary cats. I can't wait to get mine, it should be perfect with stock midsection and cats.

Yeah, I agree. I think I'm going to pull it and put one of my other exhausts back on, the rasp is killing me. I gotta see if it's the turner test pipes that are raspy (which would explain why not that many people are running them) or if the BMW performance exhaust just lets it through more than other solutions. (I know the stock exhaust is pretty raspy with a cat delete too)

So far my favorite sound from all of your comparison vids is the AE by itself. I'd love to hear/see a vid from the same perspective with the stock center section.

Unfortunately, I no longer have a stock center section

Yeah, the AE is a nice sounding exhaust, but I suspect it will be too loud with an X pipe. It was as loud with the stock center section as my Vanguard and my Akrapovic with the Fabspeed x-pipe!

Send a message via AIM to a burrito
Its got that nascar sound track to it.. I actually like it. I think a drive-by would show a different aspect of the sound.

BTW, Kit if you decide to sell your test pipes i'll be glad to take em

Was there any drone with this? I would imagine with test pipes there was. More curious about just the axle back unit?

Absolutely none. The car completely shut up under cruise, it was kind of weird and shocking.

That said, the Turner test pipes are quieter than most x pipes because they keep the stock cats and resonators.

Kit the car sounds great!! I love a little rasp, it gives the car a little edginess, rawness that I love. If you ever hear a GrandAm car...you will know what I mean.

^ yeah, that was my problem too. It was like my 05 E46 M3 all over!

Actually, what was weird was that you couldn't really hear the raspiness from inside the car, it only reflected off buildings and stuff and in the video. It didn't bug me at first, but then it did. Oh well. The Arqray sounds great with the turner test pipes and isn't as loud as it was with the other X pipes.

Kit the rasp isn't that bad..I didn't think so anyway. Yes it had some, but the E46 M3 sounded like a pissed off weed whacker.
