Moving to 20" rims, thoughts?

I am new to the forum (posting that is, been reading a bit hear and there).

I just moved back from Germany to the DC area. Finally being back, looking at replacing my stock rims/tires with a set of 20"s

looking at
Front:20x8.5, Rear:20x10
Tires: 245/35/20, 275/30/20

thoughts and advice is greatly appreciated!

thanks,

My recommendation is not to get 20's. Stick with 19's or 18's which suit the car far better, better tire size options, higher performance tires available, better performance and look better. There really is no good reason to put 20's on an M3.

I agree... 19's already affect ride negatively. 18's don't look as cool but to me the car goes over the road so much nicer. It's a conundrum -- I like bigger wheels and lowered cars with a super cool looking stance. But the reality is that stock ride heights and smaller wheels just run better.

I actually think that 18" wheels in aggressive sizes on a lowered car look the best. If style is your concern, Big wheels are out IMO, 18" wheels with beefy tires and a track look are what's "in".

Its funny, i would bet most M3 owners are not into the track look. To me the M3 is classy and sporty.

personally i would never run 18s.

but i think we can agree 20s are no good .

Maybe it's just a west coast thing... It will get to the Midwest soon . I lived in MN since last year and car modding styles are definitely different in the Midwest.

i really do understand the "track look" you mentioned, I know it looks very aggressive. I just think its a bit to hardcore for most people is what i am saying.

I am all for a lowered car with fat tires though.

but you do make a good point about different areas liking different things.

Agree'd. 20's are more for show and they negatively affect performance. 18's have the best performance since they are lighter (in most cases), tires selection is abundant and you can run wide tires with more comfortable sidewall heights. However 19's are the best compromise between looks and performance....although I do prefer the look of 18's with beefier tires. I don't dig the extremely thin profile tires.

Lots of good advice here. From personal experience, let me add this. I went from stock 17" to wider stanced 18" on a Boxster some years back, and although the car looked incredibly hot that way, the ride was definitely compromised, any road harshness was amplified a ton, and acceleration was noticably slowed. I don't think 20's will rob acceleration on an M the way the bigger wheels did on the Porsche, but that little car only had 227 hp and so the heavier wheels and tires had a big effect. An M3 with 20's and a wide stance through offset or spacers is definitely a hot and aggressive look, though.

stick with a good looking 19 and dont go to low profile on the tires either or driving will be compromised. dont pick up something that is much heavier or there is no point to the swap.

I just recently went to 20" wheels and even though it looks better it rides rougher too.

20's for show and 19's for go

You get a pass because your 20's are BBS LM's.

Completely agree.

Over the last three weeks, I had to be down in San Diego for work. Of the three drives down and back, 2 were on the 20's. I was curious so I swapped back to the stock 19's for the 3rd week.

Definitely a difference in the feel and responsiveness between the two. The car feels "quicker" and stops better on the 19's.

I noticed a bit more road noise and little rougher ride on the 20's.

But DAMN, ... those 20's look nice!!!

Had 20s for a year and hated them for all the reasons listed above, in addition to bending them.

Thanks! why they never made these in better sizes and offsets we'll never know.

Fills the wheel wells out nicely. I was surprised to see the M4 concept had a 20" factory option.

I was thinking about this the other day. What type of suspension if any are you running?
I have the KW sleeve kit, but I think my 20's could be the nail in the coffin for this setup. Its just to rough for the ride height I have set and the stock shocks. I'll probably have to move to a full coilover setup soon.
