Question about reving engine

Hey guys so I was listening to my exhaust and reving up my car and I noticed that my car stops me at around 7k rpms.. I thought my rev limiter was at 85k. I hit red line all the time while driving but why does it stop me at 7 while stopped ?? Strange ..

Talks about this in the manual, redline at a stand-still is around 7k rpm...

Edit: Here it is, pg 52 of the M3 supplemental manual... "Because of the powerful engine dynamics, the maximum engine
speed is limited to 7,000 rpm when the vehicle is stationary."

Because its not a good idea to rev your engine that high without any load.

If you clutch in and put the car in gear you can rev to redline.

What is this 85K rev limit you speak of?

Don't rev your engine that high while at a standstill, OP. Hell I probably wouldn't even go past 5.5K, and even then just a throttle blip, not holding the throttle down. Not only is it bad for an engine to rev like that without any load as others have mentioned, but keep in mind you're revving the engine without any airflow being pushed into the intake the way it normally would be when your engine was revving that way from your car actually moving forward.

My best guess as to how this was done is constant clutch slipping with the handbrake completely engaged. I just can't believe anyone was dumb enough to do that and think they were doing a burnout.

Keep revving until you see your valves dancing on your hood. Then let off.
