BMW usually tests all new technology in the more expensive 5 & 7 series before it hits the 3 series. And with the 3 series being the cash cow, BMW can't afford large scale quality issues and usually gets it right the first time.
Engineers can do all the testing they want in different conditions, but when it comes down to it, they can never hope to replicate the millions of miles and varied conditions that all of the owners of a new model combined will put a car through. It's just a fact that owners of a brand new car are beta testers of sorts. There are always kinks in a new design that only present themselves with thousands of users. I don't hold it against others who decide to get the new hotness, but I'd just prefer to let others find early issues.

I agree that they can't afford quality issues, but this doesn't mean problems can't get past their tests. Just look at the Dreamliner debacle...

While I agree with almost everything you say, I don't think there's necessarily a rule. On one hand, the E46 M3 proved that first model years were complete disasters. Our E9x's on the other hand seem to be just as solid as all the other years (minus options like ZCP and FL taillights).

In terms of this thread? Too early to tell. All we have are some PS and debates about how much power the M3/4 will have. I'm staying put for a while with my E92 M3. In the distant future, I'll add a 997.1 Turbo (6MT) to it and call it a day.

I will most likely get the new M4 .

I got my E46 in 2001 and my E92 in 2008. Both first model years and have not had any major issues with either. So I will take my chances with the F82 .

I'm curious as to how you can say you prefer the current M3 version when the M4 has not actually been released? The M4's details are speculation at this point and nobody has driven one... How can any one of us say whether it is better or worse than the current version?

I'm sure that there will be complaints about certain aspects of the M4 initially but I am willing to bet that it's going to be a fantastic car that out-performs the current model in every measure. Especially if BMW is successful in reducing the weight. The only think that will be difficult to improve upon is the fantastic sound of the current Gen V8 engine.

My long winded answer to your question is I don't know but Probably yes.

I will likely buy the next generation M3 or M4.

I've had two BMW coupes now and might want a sedan this time, so maybe M3 > M4.

We don't know how they'll perform, but the spyshots (M3) and "97% accurate" concept (M4) look good. If they perform as expected, I'll be wanting them.

I would like to wait until the ZCP version, etc. - but, truthfully, I don't know if I'll have the patience. We'll see.

I plan on keeping the glorious S65 though. I bought it to keep.

I just don't like the look and not a fan of turbo engine, S65 is the most reliable engine and it's sad that BMW no longer offers this version on next M vehicle.

I will just get a used 2013 E92 M3 in 2 years and call it a day with BMW. Seems like there is very little that separates the regular 3/4 series with the new ///M models and they can keep the turdbros. Im fine with the NA V8 masterpiece.

1. Other than renders, nobody has seen what it looks like.

2. Other than speculation, nobody knows for sure what the engine will be.

3. Other than guess-timating based on the M5/M6 suspension/tires, etc., nobody knows what it drives like, handles like or sounds like.

4. And other than rumor, none of this will be known until the Detroit/NAIAS Show in January 2014.

So I will take a pass at answering this until I know. In the meantime, I will enjoy, and will probably keep for a long time, my E92/M3.

Although I doubt the new M3/4 will be worse, I'm surprised so many people already plan to get one w/o knowing. Maybe it'll suck

New engine, first year in production. No way. It will be a waste of my time being a test subject with all these trips back and forth to the dealer. Lci zcp is the sweet spot.

And I forgot to add the "market adjustment " I'm not willing to pay to have the latest and greatest first. Just accelerates your depreciation even further

Will do the prudent thing and see how the M4 performs, sounds, costs, etc first before making a decision.

If anything 4th year (LCI) into the new model is best bet.

Keeping my M3, not sure about the M4; looks like BMW is going the rought of the Audi A5/RS5. I'm looking for something more raw and the 997turbo or GTR might fit the bill but you never know, only time will tell what the M3/M4 has to offer.

I assume the M4 will be like a baby M5. Less raw than the current M3 but more comfortable and torquey.

Depends on what the wife wants in a few years. I will push her toward 911 turbo or GT3. She just wants better cup holders though.
