M3 vs. F430 and Gallardo... on track

I'm heading out tomorrow to Summit Point for a Ferrari/Gallardo combined track experience. Stay tuned, I'll post my impressions afterwards...

And wish me luck, I need to keep the sunny side up.

F430 is more comparable to an M3 than a Gallardo, but I'd take the Lambo over any of these cars.

Did that a couple of months ago and it was quite an experience driving the Lamborghini. It was like driving a go kart. The handling is unreal.

Have a great time and videos pretty please! I think you'll find the M to be up to the task on track with the Italians. Totally different driving experiences, no doubt, but doubt they'll be much quicker if at all around the track. Enjoy

I was on a jog tonight and by me drives an F430 in Rosso Corsa (red) at probably 5k RPM. It was magnificent to say the least.

Should be a interesting match up between the M3 and F430. I drove the Scuderia and Superleggera with Exotics Racing in Vegas, and I thought the Ferrari handled much better. Have fun and let's see some vids!

Garage List
I drove a 430 Scuderia for the first time last year in Vegas as well. Exotics Racing also. GREAT CAR! GREAT SOUND! But your ears will be bleeding afterward. Between the car noise and my helmet I couldn't hear the guy next to me.

All right folks, here we go...

First the good news: weather was perfect, track was dry and the only damage incurred to the cars were the rear bumper on the F430 and melted brakes on one of the Gallardos.

The bad news was that the instructors were, ech and every one of them, major pain in the behinds or downright pussies. There was a 6k RMP rev limit imposed on the drivers, that we were able to sometimes circumvent or not, depending on circumstance. The 430 particularly comes live at 6k, it's like a totally different car with heroic acceleration.

Despite all this, I got enough of a whiff to guess at the full flavor, and without a doubt the Ferrari wins it for me. It literally blew my mind with a combination of delicacy of controls, feedback, drivetrain and BRAKES. This car had the carbon brakes and they were absolutely magnificent. I'd kill to have brakes like these on the M3...

The Lamborghini was very enjoyable, with more grip at the front and a torquier engine but a much less mobile chassis. Because of that, it was the favorite of my non-enthusiast friends. The AWD truly sucked you out of the corners and the entire car felt mechanical and poised. And the sound was unreal.

The bad points were the brakes (more on that later), a clunkier gearshift and a slow steering rack. That last part was not that obvious on first acquaintance, but when negotiating tight turns it required a lot of hand movement, which meant you quickly lost track of the paddle shifters, which meant I must have accidentally set the the cruise control or something once or twice. The paddle shifters were very small and black, hard to spot by sight and without enough time in the car I had no muscle memory for them.

By comparison, the 430 felt much more delicate and responsive, with a familiar RWD balance which I quite enjoyed. The steering rack was quicker which meant more time with hands on the wheel and none of the paddle shifting issues from the Gallardo. The brakes were massive, with superb feel. In the Ferrari I was truly becoming one with the car, all the controls feeling like extensions of my nerves. To some extent that happens in the M3 as well, but the controls were better matches to each other in the Ferrari. I felt at home in that car, and could have gone on the whole day.

Not quite sure how to explain it, I felt the 430 had a lack of inertia and was very immediate and proportional in the delivery of every action, so it was easy to begin to trust it and work with it. A remarkable achievement, and I now officially have a car to aspire to.

I'll try to do this again the right way, perhaps at Vegas or some other place where I can clock 20 laps together at high speed. On my automotive bucket list are the Atom driving experience at VIR, some laps in formula cars and of course trying out a GT3 as well. But if nothing else pans out, the 430 will always be close to my heart.

Ah yes, the Gallardo brakes... One of the cars had fluid/overheating issues and luck of the draw, I drove it. The guy kept yammering about conserving the brakes, but it was my time in the Galardo so I didn't really pay attention.

On lap 5 coming to the corner before the back straight at around 80-90 mph the brakes failed completely. Pedal went to the floor and I had to improvise with some wheel shuffling to scrub off 20-30 mph and negotiate the turn.

Then they failed again at the next corner but I was prepared for it, so not a problem.

Turns out those "no-brakes" exercises at the track really paid off...

Edit: I added a few pics for fun, and will add a few videos as soon as I get to edit them.

I have to say, I was of the same opinion until I drove it.

Now granted, these were early cars not the LP560 so those may be better, but I was not that overwhelmed with the Gallardo. No offense to any owners...

I'll be counting my pennies and watching the car trade to bag an F430, I hope it will be a possibility one day.
