Does anyone have experience going through emissions testing while running HFCs. Maybe this is a dumb question and "Of course you wouldn't pass!" is the answer. All of the lore on this subject on this forum seems to deal with California.

I haven't (yet, have another 1.5 years till I get checked) but according to jzbm3, his Evo equipped car passes emissions but failed the visual test so too off his x-pipe. If you can manage getting your renewal by doing the remote drive-by locations maybe you'll be okay. jzbm3 can you chime in?

I had HFC's on the silver E36 and successfully passed emissions. John told me to get 'em nice & hot before pulling into the bay... so I essentially flogged it over there in second gear.
Passed without a second look. Not sure if it's the same for the E9x platform, but ![]()

Which exhaust are you running? If you have all 4 cats, but they are just HFC you might be ok, but if you're running something like the Akra EVO you will fail the visual portion of the inspection due to the missing cats.
Either way, your best bet will be to pass the roadside emissions test, which IIRC will need to be done twice within 60 days of your renewal date. With my Akra I just barely passed the manual sniffer test, and that was after driving the car extremely hard on the way to the testing center to make sure the cats were operating at max efficiency. The roadside vans are quite a bit more sensitive so I would try and cruise or coast by gently whenever you see a van. Also, I haven't confirmed this, but another member mentioned they received an emissions notice triggered by a roadside vans even though their renewal wasn't due for a few months. Just something to think about. Good luck!
