Camber Plates + Sway Bars = Tail Happy! (video)

So we all know BMW intentionally puts in understeer into their cars for our safety. When you start wanting to get faster at the track, it really sucks. I recently had vorschlag camber plates and RD sport sways installed on my car and the results have been really positive for me. I went from -1.8 to -2.4 in the front (-1.5 to -1.8 in the rear) and my rear sway bar has been set to the medium setting. The car rotates beautifully.

Last month at Thunderhill, I was getting compliments on how well my car looked like it rotated from instructors who were following me from behind and corners have become twice as fun to play in.

Well today we were back at Laguna Seca and with the sway bars and camber plates alone, I shaved a solid 2 seconds off of my lap time. But it's not as simple as that. I have to be a lot more careful with my slip angle because the rear loves to come out a lot more. I think I just need more time with this setup to get it fully under control. I think I experienced more oversteer at Laguna than when I was at Thunderhill because I'm much more confident and willing to push the car a bit harder. Anyways, here's a video:

My fastest lap was 1:44.5 and I consistently around 1:45-46 with little traffic. Before these 2 mods, my best was 1:46.6. But the best part of it all is the car is so much more fun to drive at the track.

Car was very stable. I was just driving through the corners beyond my street tires limits of grip. I could probably soften the rear bar, but the car felt good to me and I always felt in full control aside from a couple slips.

My tires pressures were way too high during that session. I was hitting 45 psi all around and the tires got really greasy. Totally affected my braking there.

That's fast!

You are a brave man! At Thunderhill, I have no problems running a more neutral set up but Laguna Seca with all the close in walls, it can be really scary. In a previous car, I've seen a friend of mine go sideways into a wall before there while I was behind him. And I have lost braking going into turn 2 before, ending up going in the gravel at 60mph and stopped only 2 feet from the wall. I guess because of that, I tend to drive more conservatively at Laguna Seca.

Thanks for sharing your feedback on the bars and plates. I have the RD bars as well, but only have the front on at the moment. I've been a little gun shy to put the rear on for fear of inducing too much oversteer.

Does it feel like the middle setting in the rear gives you the sense that you're more on the brink of oversteering or breaking traction? Or is it really giving you that much more confidence to carry more speed? It would be an interesting test to adjust the bar from the middle to the low setting between runs to guage the effect.

What, if any, lube did you use on the sway bar bushings? I used a little silicone lube and it broke down fairly quickly and began squeaking. This is easily fixed in the front, but not so much for the rear.

Yes the middle setting definitely gives you the sense that it's ready to oversteer, but it doesn't feel like it's just snapping into it out of nowhere. I can almost predict when it's about to happen before it does and I'm ready for it. I'm just not good enough to feel that perfect slip angle and ride it through the corner yet...at least not consistently. I should probably go to the softer setting in the rear next time to see how that works out.

I've only had my sway bars on for a few months so no squeaking yet. I'm sure it will happen eventually, but I'm fine with it.

I never felt like the walls were that close at Laguna. Infineon scares the crap out of me. I should probably stay away from there with this setup.

Nice job but if I had to offer some critique...I'd look at your braking technique in the oversteer moments. You were on, off, on, off which at threshold braking will upset the car. So when you went to throttle the suspension couldn't set the rear quick enough so the back end came out.

Recommend developing a reference point at the end of your braking zone so you know where to end braking. That will facilitate a smooth build up of brake pressure and release. So the front end stays planted and then the rear takes a set when you get back to throttle and you have more grip.

The fast lap looked much better.
