Brake Dust On Rims, Really?



I seriously cann't believe that BMW have not yet developed a way to prevent brake dust from accumulating on their great looking 19's rims by now.

Nothing pisses me off than looking at my new M3 wheels and noticing how dirty they get just after 25 miles of stop and go driving. I've tried rim wax and sprays to prevent the built up of brake dust and nothing stops it.

I remember having this same problem with all of my BMWs (320i, 325i, 525i and 740i). And I do recall buying some brake shields for my 325i. They worked to prevent the dust from building up. But they made the rims heat up more a and they really didn't make the rims look nice at all.

Thats just the way it is. Its a high performance vehicle and the dust has to go somewhere. All you can do is keep up with them. Avoid using chemicals and waxes to try and prevent it. The chemicals in a way end up being magnets for the dust. Use nothing but soap and water to clean the wheels.

I have the same gripe as well. I know all pads will produce dust, but the OEM ones seem to produce an excessive amount. When they're due for replacement, I definitely be looking at non-OEM options to reduce the dust build up.

Yep, it's all about brake lining selection. There is a tradeoff for high Mu linings = brake dust. You can always look to switch to a ceramic pad :

Prevent brake dust?..interesting.. Do you also want to prevent braking?

Brake dust is an integral by-product of braking..not much can be done about it.

FYI lower brake dust pads = lesser friction and braking power

I've used Hawk HPS pads on my CTS-V. They had much less brake dust than the OEM pads and I thought they performed better.

There are low dust pads available aftermarket. OEM ones are quite dusty.

If your M3 is being mainly used on the street with very light track usage, I suggest you switch over to the Akebono EURO Ceramic brake pads. They are pretty much dustless and perform very well for a street vehicle which sees some light track duty.

If the car is going to be consistently used at the track, then brake pads, lines, and fluid are in order for you.

I used the same on my Audi S4 and was very happy with the results.

It's about $12 a can, but it's totally worth it. This stuff keeps the brake dust off for weeks. Some tips for using this:

* Clean the wheel extremely well before applying and DO NOT touch the wheel with your hands before applying; the slightest amount of oil from your fingers will keep it from working right
* Apply liberally, but slowly; take your time like you're painting the wheel
* Once you've applied it well, you can wash the wheels with soap and water (no wheel cleaner) and re-apply a little less liberally to safe the product
