Spoiler
Keeping--it is so small it's not a maor design element, but it does clean up the airflow and reduce some drag at speed.

No question...keeping...because deleting meen you couldn´t upgrade the speed from 250km/h to 280km/h...bmw M-GmbH don´t make this upgrade posible without this rear spoiler...

Has anyone seen evidence of the availability of this option? In any case, the "Gurney flap" is pretty inoffensive (cf. "Powerdome"!)... |

yeh I've seen it.... I think it was on german option list thread a couple months ago..... also remember reading that if you get the spoiler removed you cant have it delimited.......
Anyway, dont you have to have some sort of race license to get it delimited or am I chatting rubbish..... Quote:

The 280km/h "M-Driver"option doesn´t meen delimited - they only increase the limit, because the M5 could reach 305km/h with this option and they won´t hurt the bigger car (and sales).
According to my dealer fully delimited 310km/h are posible. Also he claims that the M-driver option wouldn´t be installed as soon as the car is more than 2000km old. |

They haven't offered speed delimiting in the US before, at least on the 3-Series. And yes, spoiler deletion will almost certainly be a no cost/no credit option.

Could this be similar to the current E46 CSL, one piece CF...

As much as I don't like the look, I'll probably end up keeping it... I'd guess the M3 front clip generates additional downforce, so I'm guessing the rear lip spoiler is there to keep things equal.

M3 spoiler

But, it should have a slight effect on mileage at speed and top speed. Henri Coanda was an Italian aerodynamacist that discovered this. See pages 137 - 138 of the 7/01 Road & Track. There's a diagram of a spoiler exactly like the M3s showing the effect. See also: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coanda_Effect

Cool info - definitely didn't know that... I thought it would be similar to what a Gurney Flap does, but in looking at Coanda info, you're probably right. Here's some Gurney Flap info for those who aren't familiar with the tech: http://www.insideracingtechnology.com/tech104gurney.htm and http://www.allamericanracers.com/gurney_flap.html
Either way, I'm sure it's a functional piece which BMW didn't just put there for looks, so I won't be removing it ![]()
