playing video files (ie: .avi .mp4 .wmv .mkv )

I know this can't be the only thread going asking this but I've done multiple searches and couldn't find anything close. Most talk about dvd in motion but that's not what I'm interested in.

I have movies on file, most with .avi extensions, and I was wondering if there was a way to play them via usb drive.

Some tell me I have to burn dvds.

I spoke with others and they tell me it's possible to play movies via ipod, but I'm curious if any of you figured out other ways. Thanks in advanced.
