ahaaa....good info...thanks!!

2) Get all of the service reports on the car. They should be available at any BMW Dealership.

3) Grab one of your knowledgeable friends that knows cars and go over the results of 1 & 2 above with a fine tooth comb.

If it is a private sale ,,, insist of 1 and 2 above to be done.

Once you do this and you still want the car renegotiate the sale price based on what if any work is to be done as found and identified during the BMW inspection.

Ask this question half way into the inspection, this will do two things a) they will make a good inspection and b) the end result will be as near to the truth as you may come ---> As this is done ask BMW what would it cost me to purchase an extended warrenty for this car, if they are willing to do it then that is a good indication the car has a clean bill of health ... so don't get the extended warranty (save the money for future repairs if they surface, they will be far less then the 7K) ... If BMW is not prepared to sell you extended warranty on the car walk away and find a better car.
this is a great idea! i think i will give this a shot...

Oh okay, just going from what I've read on the forums, m3forum and other bmw forums about the original owner and warranty. I've read posts from a few different people that they've given money to the original owner to purchase warranty prior to buying the car. But maybe that's in the past.

Hmm has something changed with extending the warranty. A quick search brings up this thread where a few mention original owners and warranty

extd warranty can be purchased directly from bmw as long as the orig warranty (4 yr/50k) is not expired...does not have to be orig owner...this extends warranty for 3 years and 50k miles..

all this, per my local dealership...

If you can barely afford it, don't buy it. Wait until your financial situation is better. As sweet as these cars are, it's a depreciating asset. Don't risk your financial future...

Get a BRZ/FR-S or an S2000 and start saving for the day you can have your ///M.

I would say that if you're looking at an 09 and is out of warranty, and looking to spend $7k for an extended, to just keep looking for a car within the same range (cost of the 09 + $7k and get a CPO'd car with less miles, hell, maybe even a model year newer).

I can afford the payment, esp if i stretch the loan to 72 months. Just not a lot of cushion available, if something goes seriously wrong...then its back to credit card debt...

I am honestly not looking to get the $7k warranty...just wondering if I can manage without it....

so far, it seems that most e90 M3 owners are happy with the reliability of their rides...now, every car is diff based on how they have been handled....so, i think i will make that 400 mile trip and check it out...

dont be a walking cliche...if youre already tight on money...i strongly recommend that you do not pull the trigger...you could very easily find yourself in credit card debt again...tires,etc....can easily run you 2-3k out of warranty

If it costs 7k for an extended warranty, I'd look for a CPO or just get a new one. Your payment on a new one would probably only be a few hundred a month more, it would take at least a couple years to make up the 7k warranty cost, and the car would be worth a hell of a lot more.

Never understood extended warranties, at least for that much dough. Plus, from my experience, whatever breaks will invariably not be covered by your warranty.

Put another way, say a brand new M3 depreciates 20k in three years. A used one will depreciate probably 10k, plus your 7k warranty, plus maintainance that would be covered on a new one (or not necessary), and it sounds like a break even proposition to buy a new one, but you'll have a lot less worries. Take out the warranty, and a used car makes sense, but you have a bit more risk. My lease payment is $700/mo. with only like $3k down. The extended warranty would cover 10 months of my payments.
