E93 roll cage?
What's the feasibility of putting a roll cage in an E93 for taking to the track? Has anyone done this? Especially interested in one that can easily be removed.

I'm just curious, why wouldn't you start with a coupe or sedan to convert to a track only car?

With the thickness of the hard top, I think you would have to keep the roof down permanently or you would not be able to pass the broomstick test.
Forgive me if you're not new to all this, but you do realize you shouldn't be driving a car with a cage without a helmet right? If you are saying cage but mean roll bar or half cage, then see first paragraph.

I think this makes about as much sense as the helicopter ejector seat.
So you put a cage in your car that you take in and out before and after every event? |

Some people race Spec E30's with welded cages, but I doubt you want to weld a cage into your convertible. Install/removal is really a pain of even a bolt in bar/cage.

Just get a coupe. Coupe is lighter, more rigid, and has better aerodynamics. If you're hardcore enough to warrant a cage you'd be well advised to put down a few thousand bucks (or possibly even trade straight up) for a better suited car for your purposes.

The last post shows that it is possible! And he even stripped the back!
Honestly I don't think you will ever want to remove and reinstall a cage. You could go the route of an add-in roll bar. I know they make one for the E90 and E92 (E93 no idea) so you can run racing seats and a harness without a cage. They also are somewhat removable if you only do a few events per year.

Well... if you want it for show, then look at that it can be done. I wonder if the top can be put up with that bar though or if is not longer a convertible at this point.
If you want it for safety, that bar doesn't look sufficient. My head with a helmet on would stick above that bar for example. Also, Looks like removing the stock seats removes the side impact airbags and they are not replaced by any door bars. I even wonder about how it would hold up in a rollover. The only benefit I see is being able to wear a hans device with this setup. Overall, I just don't think this is a safe solution for track use. |

+1
Better off staying with factory engineered safety.
