i personally wouldnt ever go any higher than 6000k on a vehicle like an m3. the 8000k has just too much of a blue hue to it and it makes the car look cheap. of course, this is just my opinion.

ive had luck with the xenon replacement bulbs from lightwerkz, i had 5000k on my e46 m3 and they worked great!!!!

I got the Osram 5500K CBI. Let's see how good they'll compare to the stock bulbs. Supposedly they're brighter and whiter.

Sad to say but most people who have the Ultinons that got it from Ebay or E92 lighting, are knock-offs, even though they have the Philips markings etc. Ive searched long and hard and just couldn't find authentic Philips 6k bulbs. If you do a quick google search you will find that many people found them to be fake. Simple because Philips does not make Ultinon D1S. And usually the knock-offs are labeled XenStar or Xenstart. And you cannot buy from Philips direct from USA because law prohibits Philips to resell those lights here. Only way was to get it overseas and the last time I was in Europe I went and got a set at a Philips authorized retailer. My Philips 6k are NOT Ultinons. They are in fact just called "Philips Ultra Blue". Philps Ultinon was only made in D2S (E46/E39) and D2Rs (previous gen Audi).

Here is a picture of what mine looks like:

The bulbs are amazing and way better than the previous Ultinon I had on my E46 M3. The new bulb are actually extremely cool because the light they project are actually dual-color. They are 4300k in the middle of the beam, and around 5800k around the far left and far right corners. Philips says its to reflect off road signs better while providing better visiblity further down the road with with the warmer temp in the center. Ill take a picture maybe later tonight to show it but its very cool. It was not cheap at around $280 a set, but its well worth it.

Here's a picture of the beam:

hard to see at close range but the center is as bright as the 4300 stock Philips. At the 2 sides they turn to a cool white with a hint of blue, looks very cool.

Here's a picture of the bulbs in the projector housing:

Its a pure white and matches Lux V3 perfectly.

and I dug up my old photos of my bulbs before they were installed:

That's interesting. Here's an eBay listing for Ultinons

His claim is that these are from Germany. Can you tell if these are real or knock offs?

I'd say fake. What tipped me off is that in the 4th photo it says Xenstart, which is what all the known knock-offs are labeled. Its been a long time since Ive had these bulbs for about a year, but when I was doing my research and calling around overseas in Japan and in Germany with AUTHORIZED Philips distributors, nobody ever heard of Philips "xenstart" 6k bulbs in D1S. They simply didn't exist according to their database. They only had Philips "Ultrablue" 6k in D1S or Philips "Ultinon" in D2S/D2R.

I hope that helps the members here acquire these bulbs, they are extremely difficult to find in the US. My friend fruit cake has a set too, he was actually the one that introduced me of these "ultrablue" bulbs before I made the mistake of buying "xenstarts" from E92 Lighting, which are KNOWN to be knockoffs, sad to say. The problem is that these chinese knock-offs are so damn real down to the box, etc. that nobody bothers to find the real ones...

Just got my Osram CBIs in the mail. I will install them sometime next week and write a short review afterwards. This might actually be what many of us were waiting for.

From actual owners, they're promised to be pure white with no yellow and brighter than our stock 4300K D1S Xenons.

I will surely keep you all updated.

Any word on how the Osrams turned out? I want to pickup some new bulbs. I was going to go with the Philips 6k but I'm concerned I'd just end up with a knockoff, so now I'm thinking of going with the Osrams.

The CBIs blow away the stock bulbs in every single way. A bit pricey, but worth every penny.

Would love to see some pics if you got some. What's so much better about it vs stock?
