DILEMMA: M5 or M3 E92
Hey guys,
I've got a dilemma and thought I'd post to get your feedback. Although I'm very blessed to be able to make these decisions, it's still a difficult decision to make and hopefully I can get your insight to help me make a decision. I currently drive a 2011 E93 M3, 2010 E90 335i (full M3 suspension and coilovers w/ cobb tune), and a 2012 Wrangler Rubicon. I absolutely love my Rubicon, it's my 3rd JK wrangler in 5 years, the other 2 traded in when I bought my 335i and bought my Wife's car. Saying that, I plan on keeping this Jeep for off-road activity / beater car / towing / beach......etc. My lease on my M3 is up in December of next year and I own my 335i. I would like to buy another M car with the hopes of building an M stable. I would like something to take to the track since I routinely track my 335i, and I'm absolutely in love with the S65 V8. But I also realize with the new spy pics of the upcoming M3 and M4 that they are going to be monsters. SHOULD I return the M3 convertible off lease and trade in my 335i for: 1. M5 2. M3 E92 in Frozen brilliant white (would most likely buy an M3 F80 sedan 2-3 years later.) 3. buy out M3 convertible, hold on to 335i until new M3 comes out and then trade it in. Looking forward to hearing your opinions! Thanks, Haysam |

M5 - nice but too big.
M3 - perfect! F30 - ugly.

I suspect that you will get opinions all over the map on this one, so here's one waypoint...
In addition to my E92 M3, I too have a JK Wrangler (Sport not Rubicon). To me this is the best of both worlds. I drive the Wrangler when the weather is bad, parking spots may be iffy, when I want to take my dog, etc. And I drive the M3 for therapy, on nice days, on weekends, on back roads, etc. To me a car like the E92 M3 is 50% performance and 50% looks and lines - both of which are subjective. But I love the lines on the E92 from all angles. And, as you said, the S65 NA engine is a peach. I recently opted to buy out the lease on my M3 because I decided that the F30's (and likely the F80/F82's) looks and lines were not anywhere near as fine as the E92. As one example, just take one look at the ugly hood cutline crossing above the Roundel on the F30, totally ruining the flow and lines of the hood as opposed to the integrated hood cutline on the E90/E92/E93. And I felt there was no way an FI engine would meet my needs/desires as much as the sweet NA S65 mill on the E92. I am way happy with my decision and will likely keep the E92 M3 for many years and never look back. The M5 discussion is really apples and oranges. It's a different beast altogether. I have not driven it so I have no opinion on the performance. But I have been up close to it many times studying the looks and lines, and I am not a fan of the F10's lines at all, except perhaps from the rear. And the manufactured/piped in engine noise is hokey. I voted for you to go the E92 route (I'd do Frozen Brilliant although I love IB). As I said, you should get lots of opinions masquerading as advice on this one. Keep us posted and good luck. |

no offense OP but what's going on with all these guys with money and can't make their own decision? test drive an M5 then if you have the juice, go for whatever you think you will like. if later down the road, you don't like it anymore, switch it for something else. life is short.

I drove the the 550 and was taken for a ride in the F10 m5 and that ride is what made me look at an M3. I was a 5 series guy until the F10 and then jumping into a e90. Stick with the M3....... Better yet wait for the M4

My thoughts are that you already have an M3, so getting another one isn't really much of a change. If you were to do that, I would just keep your current one.
I'd rather have the 2008 M3 that I have now over a 2012 Competition package. There's just no discernible difference other that age and mileage. I would just go for the M5.. I had one on order and cancelled it because I don't want to be upset when they offer the active seats and LED lighting on it next model year. I've already spent my life retrofitting the 2008 M3 I have now to a 2012, so this one is a keeper forever. I just can't see myself going from M3 to M3, so time for the next playing field . Voted M5 unless the 335 has some sort of sentimental value to you would is also a reasonable factor.

Seriously... Especially considering he wants to take it to the track. Good luck getting those 4300 lbs around a tight corner.

Have you driven an M5? Very different car. An E92 M3 will feel athletic compared to your E93. An M5 will feel like a boat. A fun boat, but a boat nonetheless.

That's the power of M marketing. Anytime they show an M5 it's doing laps on a track so people think it's the best track car.
